This is a survey of the use of the bootstrap in the area of systematic and evolutionary biology. I present the current usage by biologists of the bootstrap as a tool both for making inferences and for evaluating robustness, and propose a framework for thinking about these problems in terms of mathematical statistics.
In the past few years there has been an impressive number of proposals for application-specific overlays or peerto-peer networks. However the procedure to bootstrap peers in those networks has remained an under-researched topic, typically left as an implementation detail. In this paper, we first study the performance of history lists, a common decentralised bootstrap mechanism used in P2P appli...
Under model correctness, highly accurate inference on a scalar interest parameter in the presence of a nuisance parameter can be achieved by several routes, among them considering the bootstrap distribution of the signed root likelihood ratio statistic. The context of model mis-specification is considered and inference based on a robust form of the signed root statistic is discussed in detail. ...
Xface, the new version of our open source, platform independent toolkit for developing 3D embodied conversational agents is presented. The toolkit currently incorporates four pieces of software. The core Xface library is for developers who want to embed 3D facial animation to their applications. XfaceEd editor provides an easy to use interface to generate MPEG-4 ready meshes from static 3D mode...
This report reviews several bootstrap methods with special emphasis on small sample properties. Only those bootstrap methods are covered which promise wide applicability. The small sample properties can be investigated analytically only in parametric bootstrap applications. Thus there is a strong emphasis on the latter although the bootstrap methods can be applied nonparametrically as well. The...
The bootstrap has made a fundamental impact on how we carry out statistical inference in problems without analytic solutions. This fact is illustrated with examples and comments that emphasize the parametric bootstrap and hypothesis testing.
Liouville field theory on an unoriented surface is investigated, in particular, the one point function on a RP2 is calculated. The constraint of the one point function is obtained by using the crossing symmetry of the two point function. There are many solutions of the constraint and we can choose one of them by considering the modular bootstrap. ∗E-mail: [email protected]
In this paper, Front Engine Accessory Drive (FEAD) system of automotive engine is modeled with ADAMS software. The model is validated using engine test data. It is then used to investigate the effect of design parameters on the system performance such as belt vibration and loads on the idlers. Three alternative layouts were developed in order to improve the performance of original EEAD system. ...
Although there exist advanced models which predict beach profile for natural beaches, the behavior of the beaches in front of seawalls still suffers from the lack of appropriate theoretical models and sufficient measured data. In this paper, following the results obtained from the measurements, a beach profile evolution model is developed, using the measured probability distribution of the nea...
