New Candida species may cause bloodstream infections challenging current therapeutic approaches because of unpredictable susceptibility and virulence. In the present report, we describe a fungemia case due to Candida pulcherrima in a premature neonate. After full in vitro diagnostic workup, the neonate was successfully treated with liposomal amphotericin B and micafungin achieving rapid fungal ...

Candida auris is a multidrug-resistant yeast incriminated in a wide spectrum of invasive infections, especially in intensive care settings. The first draft genome sequence of C. auris, VPCI 479/P/13, from a case with fungemia was sequenced using the Illumina MiSeq platform. The estimated genome size is 12.3 Mb, with 6,675 coding sequences.

We report a case of fungemia caused by Candida magnoliae, a yeast never associated with human disease. The infection occurred in a 42-year-old Chinese patient with gastric cancer complicated by peritoneal carcinosis. Multiple blood cultures were positive for yeast; the species was well identified with biochemical and molecular methods. The phylogenetic analysis showed a close relationship of C....

We report a case of Candida norvegensis invasive disease in an immunosuppressed renal transplant patient on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. Multiple cultures of peritoneal fluid, blood, and tracheal suction done over a 2-week period were positive for this unusual isolate. Despite treatment with amphotericin B and flucytosine the patient died. This is the first report of C. norvegensi...

We describe a case of recurrent Candida glabrata fungemia that became unresponsive to fluconazole treatment. Posttreatment isolates from blood and vaginal cultures of the immunocompetent patient were azole resistant and exhibited upregulated expression of CgCDR1/CgCDR2 efflux pumps compared to the original isolates. Amphotericin B therapy eradicated the infection.

We report the first four North American cases of Candida dubliniensis fungemia, including the first isolation of this organism from the bloodstream of an HIV-infected person. All isolates were susceptible in vitro to commonly used antifungal drugs. This report demonstrates that C. dubliniensis can cause bloodstream infection; however, the incidence of disease is not known.

Lodderomyces elongisporus is phenotypically closely related to Candida parapsilosis and has recently been identified as an infrequent cause of bloodstream infections in patients from Asia and Mexico. We report here the isolation of Lodderomyces elongisporus from the catheter of a suspected case of fungemia. The identity of the isolate was confirmed by phenotypic characteristics and ribosomal DN...

The Exophiala genus comprises dimorphic melanized fungi responsible for a spectrum of diseases including phaeohyphomycosis, mycetoma, chromoblastomycosis and fungemia. The E. jeanselmei species is predominant in such infections, followed by E. dermatitidis. This paper aims at reporting four cases and at discussing clinical, histologycal, mycologycal and epidemiologycal aspects for its diagnosis.
