This article surveys some of the highlights in the development of string theory through the first superstring revolution in 1984. The emphasis is on topics in which the author was involved. Based on a lecture presented on June 20, 2007 at the Galileo Galilei Institute

This paper states and proves a precise sense in which, if all the measurable properties of an ordinary quantum mechanical system are ultimately derivable from position, then time in quantum mechanics can have no preferred direction. In particular, I show that when the position observable forms a complete set of commuting observables, Galilei invariant quantum mechanics is guaranteed to be time ...

Laughlin’s Ansatz to explain the fractional Quantum Hall effect is derived by coupling a particle associated with “exotic” the two-fold central extension of the planar Galilei group. The reduced system is identical to the one used to describe the dynamics of vortices in an incompressible planar fluid.

This paper focuses on the structure and function, as well interweavings, variations integrations of three types scientific writing (the dialogue, treatise, essay) to which Italian pedagogy has focused only partially. From reflections presented through examples given (Galilei, Darwin, Piaget) it emerges that, starting with "scientific revolution," renewal science also taken place contribution wr...

In the framework of Galilei classical and mechanics (i.e. , generally relativistic classical mechanics on a spacetime with absolute time) developed by Jadczyk and Modugno, we analyse systematically the relations between symmetries of the geometric objects. We show that the (holonomic) infinitesimal symmetries of the cosymplectic structure and of its potentials are also symmetries of spacelike m...

Relativistic and nonrelativistic anyons are described in a unified formalism by means of the coadjoint orbits of the symmetry groups in the free case as well as when there is an interaction with a constant electromagnetic field. To deal with interactions we introduce the extended Poincaré and Galilei Maxwell groups.
