It is generally considered that desert ecosystems release CO2 to the atmosphere, but recent studies in drylands have shown that the soil can absorb CO2 abiotically. However, the mechanisms and exact location of abiotic carbon absorption remain unclear. Here, we used soil sterilization, (13)CO2 addition, and detection methods to trace (13)C in the soil of the Mu Us Desert, northern China. After ...

Aims. We present numerically calculated, disk-integrated, spectropolarimetric signals of starlight that is reflected by vertically and horizontally inhomogeneous gaseous exoplanets. We include various spatial features that are present on Solar System’s gaseous planets: belts and zones, cyclonic spots, and polar hazes, to test whether such features leave traces in the disk-integrated fux and pol...

Gaseous HgH2, CdH2, and ZnH2 molecules were synthesized by the direct gas-phase reaction of excited mercury, cadmium, and zinc atoms with molecular hydrogen. The molecules were identified by their high-resolution infrared emission spectra, and the metal-hydrogen bond lengths were determined from the rotational analysis of the antisymmetric stretching fundamental bands.

We study the annealed site-diluted versions of the classical O(n) Heisenberg ferromagnets. It is shown that if the temperature is low enough, then at some value of the chemical potential there is phase coexistence between a magnetized, high-density state (liquid-crystal state) and a low-density state (gaseous state) with no magnetic order.

The influence of gaseous ammonia and sulphur dioxide on the formation of 2378-substituted PCDD/F on a reference flyash from a municipal waste incinerator has been investigated using a laboratory scale fixed-bed reactor. The reference flyash samples (BCR-490) was reacted under a simulated flue gas stream at temperatures of 225 and 375°C for 96h. The experiments were carried out in two series: fi...

Gaseous monochlorobenzene was irradiated with KrF excimer laser (248 nm) under reduced pressure. The photodecomposition was an apparent first order reaction. When the system contained no additive gas, the photolysis was found to give benzene (conversion yield: 49%) in the gas phase and many unidentified products in the solid phase. On the other hand, in the presence of oxygen, carbon dioxide (1...

The gaseous phase of cigarette smoke induced a 2- to 36-fold increase in the activity of guanylate cyclase in supernatant and particulate fractions from various rat and bovine tissues over basal activity. The characteristics of this phenomenon paralleled those of the activation of guanylate cyclase by nitric oxide, which is a component of tobacco smoke.

Tungsten filaments used as sources of electrons in a low-temperature liquid or gaseous helium environment have remarkable properties of operating at thousands of degrees kelvin in surroundings at temperatures of order 1 K. We provide an explanation of this performance in terms of important changes in the thermal transport mechanisms. The behavior can be cast as a first-order phase transition.

diffusion flame in a dust cloud combustion in a counterflow configuration is investigated in this research. it is presumed that the fuel particles vaporize first to yield a gaseous fuel to oxidize with the gas phase. the reaction rate is assumed to be of the arrhenius type. conservation equations for the non-unity lewis number are solved and the flame temperature with the variations of differen...
