Serum gastrin and gastric acid responses to a test meal of 10% peptone were measured in six duodenal ulcer patients using intragastric titration at pH levels ranging from 5.5 to 1.0. In this way the pH profile for inhibition of serum gastrin release and gastric acid secretion was established. A peptone meal adjusted to pH 5.5 produced gastric acid similar to the maximal response to histamine. A...

Gastric hyperacidity, also called acid dyspepsia, is characterized by an excessive production of gastric acid by the stomach. This common condition can contribute to a host of digestive issues and diseases. Alcohol, smoking, stress, and spicy or oily foods can all lead to hyperacidity. High levels of gastric acid can in turn cause acid reflux (heartburn), gastritis, indigestion, nausea, and fla...

The cephalic phase of gastric acid secretion has been a topic of great interest to physiologists and physicians since its description by Pavlov 100 years ago. 1 In classic " sham " feeding studies performed on dogs equipped with an oesophageal stoma and a gastric fistula, Pavlov demonstrated that food was a prompt and powerful stimulant of gastric secretion. This stimulation occurred despite th...

Alcoholic beverages produced by fermentation (e.g., beer and wine) are powerful stimulants of gastric acid output and gastrin release in humans. The aim of this study was to separate and specify the gastric acid stimulatory ingredients in alcoholic beverages produced by fermentation. Yeast-fermented glucose was used as a simple model of fermented alcoholic beverages; it was stepwise separated b...

Loss of the gastric acid barrier may lead to recurrent enteric infections, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, persistent diarrhoea, and thus malnutrition. To investigate this possibility, a new, non-invasive test of gastric acid secretion was developed ideal for field use in the developing world, where chronic diarrhoea and undernutrition are common. The test relies on the capacity of the k...

OBJECTIVE To study the effect of nimesulide on acid secretion in mouse isolated stomach. METHODS Isolated lumen-perfused mouse stomachs were monitored by pH-electrodes (1). Gastric acid secretion was stimulated with histamine or 5-methylfurmethide (5-MeF, a stable acetylcholine derivative), and the effect of nimesulide and indomethacin were studied alone and in combination with famotidine. ...

The gastric acid response to the augmented histamine test was measured in 115 Ghanaian patients, including 45 cases of sickle-cell anaemia. Normal gastric acid responses were found in the patients with sickle-cell anaemia, suggesting that the frequent occurrence of indigestion in patients with this disorder is unlikely to be related to abnormal gastric acid secretion.

BACKGROUND Bile acid and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) are important toxic factors for gastric mucosal injury. We examined the role of bile acid in promoting histologic gastritis and gastric carcinoma in Japanese patients. METHODS A total of 767 patients (452 men, mean age 51.1 years) were studied. Gastric juice was collected by gastro-endoscopic examination, and the bile acid concentration...

A case of a 69 year old man in whom hypertrophic gastritis was associated with the carcinoid syndrome is reported. Concentrations of prostaglandin E2 were increased in plasma, gastric juice, gastric mucosa and urine. He had marked hypochlorhydria in response to pentagastrin stimulation (Peak acid output (PAO) pg:0.2 mmol/h). After successful hepatic arterial embolisation of the metastases (as i...

The objective of present study is to investigate anti-ulcer activity of Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam. leaves extracts on indomethacin induced ulcers in rats and establish the probable mechanism of antiulcer activity, if any and confirm the validity of claims of the activity as mentioned in texts as traditional medicines. The leaves were extracted with methanol and anti-ulcer activity was evalua...
