Abstract. We present a variational algorithm for solving the classical inverse Sturm-Liouville problem in one dimension when two spectra are given. All critical points of the least squares functional are at global minima, which justifies minimization by a (conjugate) gradient descent algorithm. Numerical examples show that the resulting algorithm works quite reliable without tuning for particul...
M-convex functions have various desirable properties as convexity in discrete optimization. We can find a global minimum of an M-convex function by a greedy algorithm, i.e., so-called descent algorithms work for the minimization. In this paper, we apply a scaling technique to a greedy algorithm and propose an efficient algorithm for the minimization of an M-convex function. Computational result...
This paper presents our recent work on developing parallel algorithms and software for solving the global minimization problem for molecular conformation, especially protein folding. Global minimization problems are diicult to solve when the objective functions have many local minimizers, such as the energy functions for protein folding. In our approach, to avoid directly minimizing a \diicult"...
Exclusion algorithms have been used recently to find all solutions of a system of nonlinear equations or to find the global minimum of a function over a compact domain. These algorithms are based on a minimization condition that can be applied to each cell in the domain. In this paper, we consider Lipschitz functions of order and give a new minimization condition for the exclusion algorithm. Fu...
This paper presents a duality theory for solving concave minimization problem and nonconvex quadratic programming problem subjected to nonlinear inequality constraints. By use of the canonical dual transformation developed recently, two canonical dual problems are formulated, respectively. These two dual problems are perfectly dual to the primal problems with zero duality gap. It is proved that...
This paper presents a novel approach to carrying out numerical minimization procedures on the Lie Group SO(3) and related manifolds. The approach constructs a sequence of local parameterizations of the manifold SO(3) rather than relying on a single global parameteri-zation such as Euler angles. Thus, the problems caused by the singularities in these global parameterizations are avoided.
