This study was designed to determine the extent of exposure of individuals to the avian influenza viruses by evaluating their humoral and cell-mediated immune response. Therefore blood samples were collected from three cohorts i.e. poultry related personals, healthy individuals and flu patients. Serum and PBMC analysis provided the information about humoral and cell-mediated immune responses re...

Influenza viruses are characterized by a high degree of antigenic variability, which causes the annual emergence of flu epidemics and irregularly timed pandemics caused by viruses with new antigenic and biological traits. Novel approaches to vaccination can help circumvent this problem. One of these new methods incorporates genetic vaccines based on adenoviral vectors. Recombinant adenoviral ve...

Assessing influenza A virus strains circulating in animals and their potential to cross the species barrier and cause human infections is important to improve human influenza surveillance and preparedness. We reviewed studies describing serological evidence of human exposure to animal influenza viruses. Comparing serological data is difficult due to a lack of standardisation in study designs an...

A novel highly pathogenic avian influenza virus belonging to the H5 clade 2.3.4.4 variant viruses was detected in North America in late 2014. Motivated by the identification of these viruses in domestic poultry in Canada, an intensive study was initiated to conduct highly pathogenic avian influenza surveillance in wild birds in the Pacific Flyway of the United States. A total of 4,729 hunter-ha...

Influenza A (H5N1) virus, has spread to several countries in the world and has a high mortality rate. Meanwhile, the virus has evolved into several clades. The human influenza A (H5N1) virus circulating in Indonesia is a member of clade 2.1, which is different in antigenicity from other clades of influenza A (H5N1). An analysis of the antigenic variation in the H5 hemagglutinin gene (HA) of the...

We report a novel electrochemical immunosensor that can sensitively detect avian influenza virus H5 subtype (AIV H5) captured by graphene oxide-H5-polychonal antibodies-bovine serum albumin (GO-PAb-BSA) nanocomposite. The graphene oxide (GO) carried H5-polychonal antibody (PAb) were used as signal amplification materials. Upon signal amplification, the immunosensor showed a 256-fold increase in...

To determine risk for avian influenza virus infection, we conducted serologic surveillance for H5 and H9 subtypes among poultry workers in Beijing, China, 2009-2010, and assessed workers' understanding of avian influenza. We found that poultry workers had considerable risk for infection with H9 subtypes. Increasing their knowledge could prevent future infections.

Influenza A viruses (IAVs) belonging to the goose/Guangdong (Gs/GD)-lineage H5Nx remain a major concern for global poultry industry, wildlife, and humans. The hemagglutinin (HA) protein is dominant antigenic epitope carrier within IAV, which in turn triggers substantial immunogenic responses infected host. current study describes development validation of highly sensitive competitive H5 ELISA (...

The continuous antigenic drifts and occasional antigenic shifts enable human influenza viruses to escape the human immune system. Moreover, the frequent occurrence of human H5N1-infected cases and the recent emergency of a novel swine-like human H1N1 influenza virus further reiterate the risk of the introduction of a new pandemic strain to humans through in toto transfer of animal influenza vir...

Fifteen strains of mAb specific for HA of the A/Hong Kong/482/97 (H5N1) influenza virus were generated. The HA antigenic sites of the human A/Hong Kong/482/97 (H5N1) influenza virus were defined by using yeast cell surface-displaying system and anti-H5 HA mAb. Evolution analysis of H5 HA identified residues that exhibit diversifying selection in the antigenic sites and demonstrated surprising d...
