In Angola during 2003-2012, we detected Haemophilus influenzae in 18% of 2,634 and 26% of 2,996 bacteriologically positive pleural or cerebrospinal fluid samples, respectively, from children. After vaccination launch in 2006, H. influenzae empyema declined by 83% and meningitis by 86%. Severe H. influenzae pneumonia and meningitis are preventable by vaccination.

Characterization of the sequences involved in recombination of the Haemophilus plasmid p1056 with the Haemophilus influenzae chromosome produced evidence indicating site-specific recombination with chromosomal tRNA(Leu). attP sequences identical to those of p1056 were found in six plasmids of diverse origin, suggesting that a family of Haemophilus plasmids recombines with chromosomal tRNA(Leu).

During a 27 month study seven nonserotypable strains of Haemophilus influenzae and two of Haemophilus parainfluenzae were isolated from nine neonates. Seven had early infection associated with respiratory distress or conjunctivitis; three had septicaemia one of whom died. The incidence of haemophilus septicaemia was 0.23 per 1000 live births.

Haemophilus influenzae antigen was detected in five of seven bronchial biopsies obtained from patients undergoing diagnostic bronchoscopy. Antibody against H influenzae antigens was obtained from a patient with bronchiectasis. Immunofluorescent techniques were used. This provides further evidence to support the pathogenicity of H influenzae in lower respiratory tract disorders.

One hundred and ninety-nine strains of Haemophilus isolates were biotyped by Kilian's method(1) and a modified API 10S strip and the results compared. One hundred percent correlation was found between the two systems.
