Hydrolases constitute a class of enzymes widely distributed in nature from bacteria to higher eukaryotes. The halotolerance of many enzymes derived from halophilic bacteria can be exploited wherever enzymatic transformations are required to function under physical and chemical conditions, such as in the presence of organic solvents and extremes in temperature and salt content. In recent years, ...

Salinity stress is one of the major abiotic stresses limiting crop production in arid and semi-arid regions. Interest is increasing in the application of PGPRs (plant growth promoting rhizobacteria) to ameliorate stresses such as salinity stress in crop production. The identification of salt-tolerant, or halophilic, PGPRs has the potential to promote saline soil-based agriculture. Halophytes ar...

Toxic heavy metals, such as lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) are widely used in industry and their accumulation in the living tissues may cause serious health problems and ecological hazards. Twenty four moderately halophilic bacteria isolated from saline environments of Iran were used to study their ability to bioremediation of lead and cadmium. Amongst them, a Gram-negative rod shaped bacterium, de...

Halophiles are in all three domains of life: Archaea, Bacteria and Eucarya. Halophilic microorganisms in addition to form major part of life biodiversity can have many biotechnological applications. The objective of this research is isolation and identification of halophilic bacteria from Urmia Lake in Iran and the study of its bacterial biodiversity. After sampling of brines from Urmia Lake fr...

A number of moderately halophilic bacteria of diverse taxonomic groups have been studied to determine the intracellular concentrations of organic compounds at various salt concentrations. Betaine was accumulated in all of these organisms in proportion to the salinity of the medium, suggesting that this compound plays a major role in osmoregulation.

Tetragenococcus muriaticus strains 3MR10-3 and PMC-11-5 are homofermentative halophilic lactic acid bacteria isolated from Thai fish sauce during natural fermentation. Their draft genomes were sequenced. Our interest in these organisms is related to their impact on fish sauce flavor and their high osmotolerance.

Here, we report the draft genome sequence of Rubricoccus marinus SG-29T, a bacterium isolated from the western North Pacific Ocean. R. marinus SG-29T possesses two different types of rhodopsin genes and belongs to the family Rhodothermaceae, with which halophilic, thermophilic, and marine bacteria are associated.
