OBJECTIVE We tested the hypothesis that simulated three-dimensional prosthesis overlay procedure planning may support valve selection in transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) procedures. METHODS Preoperative multidimensional computed tomography (MDCT) data sets from 81 consecutive TAVI patients were included in the study. A planning tool was developed, which semiautomatically creates...

In this case we illustrate our experience with transapical minimal invasive aortic valve replacement in a patient who previously underwent mitral valve replacement. The implantation did not interfere with the existing prosthesis and could even be used as a further landmark, helping height positioning of the aortic valve.

OBJECTIVES The purpose of this analysis was to assess 5-year outcomes of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) using the current technology of the self-expanding CoreValve prosthesis (Medtronic Inc., Minneapolis, Minnesota). BACKGROUND There is a paucity of evidence on long-term durability of currently available transcatheter heart valves. METHODS Starting in June 2007, all consecu...

An 18-year-old female with no past cardiovascular history was admitted to the emergency room due to dyspnoea, reduced exercise tolerance, and mild systolic murmur along the right sternal border. Bedside echocardiography documented a giant polypoid tumour filling the right ventricle (RV), protruding to the right atrium and occluding tricuspid valve in systole. No tricuspid regurgitation and valv...

OBJECTIVES This study investigates the influence of implantation depth and prosthesis oversizing on conduction abnormalities (CA) and permanent pacemaker implantation (PPI) after SAPIEN 3 (Edwards Lifesciences, Irvine, California) implantation. BACKGROUND CA and PPIs are frequent complications after transcatheter aortic valve replacement with a next-generation balloon-expandable transcatheter...

A 43-year—old man was admitted to the coronary care unit because of recurrent syncope. His medical history included pulmonic valve angioplasty at age 9 years, mechanical mitral valve replacement because of severe mitral regur-gitation caused by congenital atrioventricular canal, and pacemaker implantation because of complete atrioventricular block. On admission he was orthopneic, his blood pres...

Until recently, heart valve failure has been treated adopting open-heart surgical techniques and cardiopulmonary bypass. However, over the last decade, minimally invasive procedures have been developed to avoid high risks associated with conventional open-chest valve replacement techniques. Such a recent and innovative procedure represents an optimal field for conducting investigations through ...

Background Transarterial valve intervention (TAVI) is valuable in high-risk patients, however, in case of left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction, conventional surgery, including partial myectomy, is indicated. Case Description An 84-year-old female patient presented with increasing fatigue after TAVI in 2012, demonstrated a narrowed LVOT. Conventional surgery was performed, including...

Effective management of patients after the implantation of mechanical cardiac valves includes correct recognition of each valve and its related complications. Herein, we present the case of a patient who had undergone implantation of a floating-disc Beall-Surgitool mitral valve in 1976 and developed multiple valve-related complications. Over 30 years and in multiple medical centers, the device ...

Thrombosis of mechanical heart valve prosthesis is a rare fatal complication after heart valve replacement. This report describes an old female patient with aortic prosthetic valve thrombosis who had a successful fibrinolytic treatment.
