Disseminated neonatal herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection is characterized by progressive multiple organ failure and high mortality rates. It can result from infection with either HSV-1 or HSV-2. We report a case of disseminated neonatal herpes that was caused by HSV-1 and HSV-2.

Cells infected with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) form rosettes with C3b-coated erythrocytes, whereas cells infected with herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) or other herpes viruses do not. It was reported that glycoprotein C of HSV-1 (gC-1) mediates the binding of C3b-coated erythrocytes to infected cells and has regulatory (decay-accelerating) activity for the alternative pathway C3 con...

Glycoprotein B (gB) is one of the essential components for infection by herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1). Although several cellular receptors that associate with glycoprotein D (gD), such as herpes virus entry mediator (HVEM) and Nectin-1, have been identified, specific molecules that mediate HSV-1 infection by associating with gB have not been elucidated. Here, we found that paired immunoglobuli...

Genital herpes is increasingly caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), but recurrences are less frequent than with HSV-2. Distinguishing between primary genital infection and reactivation can be difficult, but HSV-1 more often causes severe primary infections and fewer recurrences. However, as virus reactivation is common during septic shock, a severe form of HSV-1 reactivation can occur...

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of curcumin-treated Herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) and Herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2) virions in cultured Vero cells. Previous studies have indicated that curcumin, a polyphenol extracted from the plant Curcuma longa, has demonstrated antiviral properties against a variety of viruses. After establishing the maximum non-cytotoxic concentrat...

It has been proposed that intervertebral disc degeneration might be caused by low-grade infection. The purpose of the present study was to assess the incidence of herpes viruses in intervertebral disc specimens from patients with lumbar disc herniation. A polymerase chain reaction based assay was applied to screen for the DNA of eight different herpes viruses in 16 patients and two controls. DN...

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is the leading cause of virus-induced encephalitis; however, the viral genes that regulate encephalitis have not been well characterized. In this study, we tested whether the LAT (latency-associated transcript) locus regulates the frequency of encephalitis in male or female mice. Male BALB/c mice are more susceptible to HSV-1-induced encephalitis than age-mat...

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) interfered with the adsorption of subsequently added homotypic but no heterotypic HSV, suggesting that the cellular receptors involved were type-selective. Both infective and u.v.-irradiated virus could block the attachment of virions to cellular surface receptors. The adsorption rate was studied by assaying non-adsorbed infective virus remaining in the fluid...

Background and Aims: considering difficulties in usual laboratory methods in detection of viral infections, improved DNA-based diagnostic techniques are more reliable. Loop mediated isothermal amplification method (LAMP) is a nucleic acid amplification method that amplifies DNA using six primers which has been developed to diagnose viruses as a rapid and high efficiency test. In this study, the...

background herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2 (hsv-1 and hsv-2) are common infectious agents worldwide. data on prevalence of hsv-1 and hsv-2 infections are limited in asia, especially in iran. our study aimed on determination of seroepidemiology of hsv-1 and hsv-2 infections in asymptomatic healthy students of islamic azad university of kazeroun, fars province, southwest of iran. patients ...
