We conducted 3 phase III, randomized, open-label, clinical trials assessing the safety, reactogenicity (all studies), immunogenicity (Primary vaccination study) and persistence of immune responses (Booster study) to the combined diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, poliomyelitis, and Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine (DTPa-IPV/Hib) in Chinese infants and toddlers. In the Pilot study (NCT00964028...

Porin (341 amino acids; mass of 37,782 Da) in the outer membrane of Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) permits diffusion into the periplasm of small solutes up to a molecular mass of 1400 Da. Molecular modeling of Hib porin identified its structural similarities to OmpF of Escherichia coli and disclosed for Hib porin a shorter length of loop 3 and a longer length of loop 4. By site-directed mu...

The incidence of invasive Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) infection was decreased significantly among Navajo children since the licensure of Hib conjugate vaccines, even though two lots of Hib (polyribosylribitol phosphate)-meningococcal B outer-membrane protein conjugate vaccine (PRP-OMP) widely used among the Navajo were later found to be of low immunogenicity. We measured the effectivene...

The epidemiology of invasive Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) disease and its prevention by vaccination is reviewed for the period 1995 to 2005, comparing surveillance data for 1995-2000, when both PRP-OMP and HbOC vaccines were used, with 2000-2005, when only PRP-OMP vaccine was used. Over the whole time period, notifications of invasive Hib disease have declined dramatically. In the second...

Global coverage of infant Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccination has increased considerably during the past decade, partly due to GAVI Alliance donations of the vaccine to low-income countries. In settings where large numbers of children receive only one or two vaccine doses rather than the recommended three doses, dose-specific efficacy estimates are needed to predict impact. The obje...

Asplenic patients are at increased risk for life-threatening infections with polysaccharide-encapsulated organisms, and reports of responses to polysaccharide vaccines have been conflicting. Thirty-six asplenic patients and 15 healthy controls were immunized with pneumococcal, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), and meningococcal vaccines. Antibody concentrations to Hib and pneumococcal seroty...

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) is one of the leading bacterial causes of invasive disease in populations without access to Hib conjugate vaccines (Hib-CV). India has recently decided to introduce Hib-CV into the routine immunization programme in selected States. Longitudinal data quantifying the burden of bacterial meningitis and the proportion of disease caused by ...

The effects of cefotaxime and ceftriaxone treatment on nasopharyngeal carriage of Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) were prospectively studied with 53 children with invasive Hib disease. Nasopharyngeal aspirates were monitored during therapy. Hib was eliminated within 2 days in 92% of patients and was eliminated in all patients after the third day of antibiotic treatment.

AIMS To compare the convalescent antibody response to invasive Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) disease between conjugate vaccine immunised and unimmunised children, to look for evidence of priming for immunologic memory. METHODS Unmatched case-control study in the UK and Eire 1992-2001 and Victoria, Australia 1988-1990. A total of 93 children were identified as having invasive Hib disease...

BACKGROUND Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine and pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) are relatively expensive, newly introduced vaccines in China. This study evaluates the impact of residency and urbanicity on Hib vaccine and PCV coverage for children aged 2 to 7 years living in Shanghai, China, in August 2012. METHODS In this exploratory cohort study, a sample of children aged 2 t...
