Different procedures have been used in attempts to increase the production of interferon by polyriboinosinic acid-polyribocytidylic acid (poly [rI].poly [rC]) in mice: simultaneous injection of lead acetate, cycloheximide, or actinomycin D and prior injection of Freund's adjuvant, chlorite-oxidized oxyamylose (COAM), endotoxin, or Brucella abortus. In the experimental conditions tested, lead ac...

the objective of this research was to investigate the influence of the over-expression of recombinant interferon-g during high cell density cultivation on cellular characteristics of recombinant e. coli. batch and fed-batch culture techniques were employed to grow escherichia coli bl21 for production of human gamma-interferon in pet expression system. final cell densities in batch and fed-batch...

Type I interferons are implicated in the pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Type I interferon-inducible mRNAs are widely and concordantly overexpressed in the periphery and involved tissues of a subset of SLE patients, and provide utility as pharmacodynamic biomarkers to aid dose selection, as well as potential indicators of patients who might respond favorably to anti-IFNα the...

OBJECTIVE Interferon is the first-choice therapy for HCV-positive mixed cryoglobulinemia, but only a small fraction of the patients show long-term recovery from the disease. In non-responders or relapsers, the second-line therapy (high dose interferon) generally is not effective. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of leukocyte interferon as a second-line therapy in patients...

BACKGROUND Hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection is characterized by rapidly progressive liver disease with adverse prognosis in most patients. Although interferon is the only approved anti-HDV therapy, evidence regarding the efficacy and safety of its various regimens is either old or scattered. MATERIALS AND METHODS We searched systematically Medline, EMBASE, Scopus, the Cochrane Central Regist...

Peritoneal exudate cells of mice were stimulated with a streptomycin-dependent Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain, 18b. Gamma interferon production by natural killer cells depending on interleukin-12 and interleukin-18 was induced only in the presence of a high dose of streptomycin. This study suggested the requirement of active bacterial metabolism for this host response.

Mr. F received several different treatment regimens for MM. He required a cardioprotectant, dexrazoxane, to continue treatment with the VAD regimen. He received interferon, high-dose chemotherapy with tandem stem cell transplants, and newer agents used in the treatment of MM, such as thalidomide and topotecan. However, as illustrated by Mr. F's case study, MM remains an incurable disease despit...

An enzymatic activity which, upon addition of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA), polymerizes ATP into pppA(2’pYA), or 2’5’-oligo(A), is increased in interferon-treated cells. An assay for this enzymatic activity, designated 2’5’-oligo(A) polymerase, is described here. The assay uses DEAE-cellulose chromatography for a direct measurement of 2’5’-oligo(A) synthesized by cell extracts. The optimal condi...

Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare multisystem non-Langerhans histiocytosis. CNS involvement is a major complication, which is often rapidly progressive and confers a poor prognosis. However, treatment of CNS ECD is difficult due to poor CNS penetrance by the most effective chemotherapeutic drugs commonly used in this disorder (e.g., interferon and cladribine). We describe a case of a 60-y...

BACKGROUND The prevalence of psychiatric disturbance for patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) is higher than that observed in other chronic health conditions. We report three cases of MS and bipolar disorder and we discuss the possible etiological hypothesis and treatment options. OBSERVATIONS All patients fulfilled the McDonald criteria for MS. Two patients were followed up in psychiatry fo...
