Biotic homogenization, the process of gradual replacement of native biotas by nonindigeous and locally expanding nonnative species, is rapidly diminishing the regional distinctiveness of global terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Although the empirical study of biotic homogenization is substantial and growing, the mechanisms underlying its dynamics remain poorly understood. We recently develope...

This lecture is devoted to a brief introduction to the mathematical theory of homogenization. For a more advanced presentation of homogenization, the reader is referred to the books [2], [5], [6], [11], [12], [21], [27], [32] and [33]. Roughly speaking, homogenization is a rigorous version of what is known as averaging. In other words, homogenization extracts homogeneous effective parameters fr...

EuropiumII oxide (EuO) has localized narrow 4f orbitals that exist as the degeneracy levels between the conduction band (5d orbitals of EuII) and the valence band (2p orbitals of O2-).[1] The 4f-5d electron transition and spin configuration of EuO lead to unique optical, magnetic and electronic properties.[2] We recently successfully prepared of a spindle-shape EuO nanocrystals (mean diameter: ...

We consider the homogenization of nonlinear random parabolic operators. Depending on the ratio between time and spatial scales different homogenization regimes are studied and the homogenization procedure is carried out. The parameter dependent auxiliary problem is investigated and used in the construction of the homogenized operator.

Diamond nanocrystals were synthesized catalyst-free from nanoporous carbon at high pressure and high temperature (HPHT). The synthesized nanocrystals have tunable diameters between 50 and 200 nm. The nanocrystals are dispersible in organic solvents such as acetone and are isotropic in nature as seen by dynamic light scattering.

Si nanocrystals grown on cubic SiC have been characterized using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. At lower temperatures nanocrystals grow in two different orientations, whereas at higher temperatures they grow in a single preferred orientation. The nanocrystals are shown to be unstrained; in some cases possibly due to the presence of a thin amorphous wetting layer.

Silver nanocrystals grown on a poly(dG)-poly(dC) double stranded DNA scaffold displayed circular dichroism at their surface plasmon excitation band. This chiral plasmon signature was not observed in a control experiment where silver nanocrystals of similar size were produced without the DNA template and adsorbed to the DNA. It is concluded that the DNA templated Ag nanocrystals had a preferred ...

Bioimaging and therapeutic agents accumulated in ectopic tumors following intravenous administration of hybrid nanocrystals to tumor-bearing mice. Solid, nanosized paclitaxel crystals physically incorporated fluorescent molecules throughout the crystal lattice and retained fluorescent properties in the solid state. Hybrid nanocrystals were significantly localized in solid tumors and remained in...

Octahedral-shaped perovskite PbTiO3 nanocrystals (PT OCT) with well-defined {111} facets exposed have been successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method by using LiNO3 as an ion surfactant. The Li-O bond on the surface of PT OCT nanocrystals is essential to the stability of such nanocrystals and also results in a dramatic high visible-light photocatalytic activity.

Herein we describe the first synthesis of pure mono-disperse spherical hcp-nanocrystals ferromagnetic at room temperature. Our strategy, based on the simple combination of oleylamine and ClCo(PPh3)3, allows the one-pot synthesis of size-controlled hcp-nanocrystals. The size and shape of the nanocrystals can be tuned by varying the reaction time or the concentration.
