Instead of a formal examination, HCI students completed part of their assessment in a local video game parlour. It is one of the few places where a large group of students can experience participant observation of technology in its everyday situation of use. In this paper we discuss some of the useability issues that were identified during the evaluations as well as the pedagogical insights tha...
Group efficacy has begun to receive more attention in HCI. The paper describes a mixed-design experiment aimed to explore the effect of time on group efficacy development in two computer-mediated virtual conditions: asynchronous vs. multi-synchronous teams. The relationships of group efficacy measures at different times and tool evaluation, team satisfaction and performance are also explored. F...
uiGarden, a bilingual webzine, gives an opportunity between practitioners and researches working in user experience designer field from the Chinese and English speaking part of the world to exchange opinions and gain further knowledge within the field.
The Centre for HCI Design (HCID) at City University London has Inclusive Design as one of its key research themes. Older people have been the main research population we have been studying under this theme for a number of years now. Our work in this theme focuses primarily on the design and evaluation of web interfaces for this population. In this paper we describe our work in this area.
We consider how to teach effectively with particular reference to HCI. HCI can be taught to explicitly empower students to engage with their own learning. Further, HCI motivates because HCI empowers students to make a valuable and lasting contribution to the world.
To design interfaces which occupy a continuous space of interaction, the conceptual model of an interface needs to be transferred to a spatial model. To find mappings between conceptual and spatial structure which are natural to people, an experiment is undertaken in which participants organize objects in a semi-circle of shelves around their body. It is analyzed how conceptual relationships be...
During the recent years the mainstream framework for HCI research — the informationprocessing cognitive psychology —has gained more and more criticism because of serious problems in applying it both in research and practical design. In a debate within HCI research the capability of information processing psychology has been questioned and new theoretical frameworks searched. This paper presents...
Since the initial publication in 1994, Coordination Theory (Malone and Crowston, 1994) has been referenced in nearly 300 journal articles, book chapters, conference papers and theses. This chapter will analyze the contribution of this body of research to determine how Coordination Theory has been used for user task analysis and modelling for HCI. Issues that will be addressed include: I) how th...
