The study was done with the aim to find out the effect of prophylactic chemotherapy on regression pattern of serum β-HCG and on the incidence of persistent trophoblastic disease in patients with high risk complete hydatidiform mole. Methods Out of 43 patients of complete hydatidiform mole diagnosed over a period of 1 year, 24 were categorised as high risk on the basis of Curry criteria. After s...
AIMS To assess the role of Ki67 immunoreactivity in predicting the clinical progress of hydatidiform mole. METHODS Tissue from 87 hydatidiform moles, 11 normal first trimester placentas, 11 normal term placentas and 17 spontaneous abortions were examined for expression of Ki67 antigen, using the monoclonal antibody MIB1. RESULTS Ki67 immunoreactivity was significantly higher in the tissue f...
Pulmonary lesions developed in three patients with an invasive hydatidiform mole. At open thoracotomy the modules were found to contain molar tissue. Therapy with twice-weekly methotrexate induced complete clinical and biologic remission of the disease in all three patients.
THERE SEEMS to be a great deal of confusion in the literature, due to the various terms used to describe these neoplasms. Malignant hydatidiform mole has been called destructive placental mole, invasive mole and chorio-adenoma destruens. Chorio-epithelioma has been referred to as chorioma or as chorio-carcinoma. In order to try to lessen the confusion the following comparative summary has been ...
Pemphigoid gestationis (PG) is a rare, perinatal, autoimmune, and blistering dermatosis. Only few cases of PG involving hydatidiform moles have been reported. Complete hydatidiform moles are usually evacuated by dilatation and curettage. We report a patient with a massive complete hydatidiform mole that underwent spontaneous expulsion; she subsequently developed PG. A 19-year-old unmarried null...
BACKGROUND Classification of molar gestation into Complete Hydatidiform Mole (CHM) and Partial Hydatidiform Mole (PHM) is done according to clinical, ultrasonographic, histologic and genetic criteria. However, making a distinction between CHM and PHM using histologic criteria alone may be difficult and several studies have shown that misclassifications are frequent, even for experienced patholo...
INTRODUCTION Twin pregnancy with complete hydatidiform mole represents a very rare obstetric problem. Management of such cases is always problematic because the possibility of fetal survival should always be weighed against the risk of complications of molar pregnancy. CASE PRESENTATION A 34-year-old Caucasian woman presented to our center with mild vaginal bleeding. Our patient was 16 weeks ...
Coexistence of a viable fetus with a hydatidiform mole is a rare condition and the diagnosis is very important because of the risk of developing severe complications in pregnancy. The management of these pregnancies is optional, although accurate and great care is required to find early signs of maternal or fetal complications.Hereby we report a case of dizygotic twin pregnancy with a complete ...
Prostaglandins may occupy an important role in viral and chemical carcinogen-induced neoplasia. To evaluate the possible role of prostaglandin catabolism in neoplastic cells, we measured nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide-dependent 15-hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase activity in hydatidiform mole tissue and in choriocarcinoma cells maintained in monolayer culture. The specific activity of nico...
Background: Gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) is a heterogenous group of neoplastic lesions that is derived from placental trophoblastic epithelium. According to World Health Organization (WHO) classification they include: Hydatidiform mole (complete and partial), invasive mole, choriocarcinoma and placental site trophoblastic tumor. Hydatidiform mole is the most common and the diagnosis ...
