In nanopore sensing experiments, the properties of molecules are probed by the variation of ionic currents flowing through the nanopore. In this context, the electronic properties and the single-layer thickness of graphene constitute a major advantage for molecule characterization. Here we analyze the translocation pathway of the thioredoxin protein across a graphene nanopore, and the related i...

When cerebellar Purkinje cells are depolarized with a constant current pulse injected at the soma, complex spike discharge patterns are observed (Llinas and Sugimori 1980b). A computer model has been constructed to analyze how the Purkinje cell ionic conductances identified to date interact to produce the observed firing behavior. The kinetics of voltage-dependent conductances used in the model...

The drift-diffusion (Poisson-Nernst-Planck) model is applied to ionic channels in biological membranes plus surrounding solution baths. Simulations of the K channel in KCl solutions using the TRBDF2 method are presented which show significant boundary layers at the ends of the channel. The computed current-voltage curve for the K channel shows excellent agreement with experimental measurements.

In voltage clamp experiments, ionic flow is measured as electrical current. Macroscopic currents recorded from whole cells, or from relatively large areas of cell membrane, represent the sum of the ion fluxes through many channels, generally of more than one type. The first step in the interpretation of such currents is usually their separation into constituent components, each associated with ...

A new mechanism for the generation of ionic currents around tip growing cells is presented. Because of the absorption of a nutrient by the cell tip, its concentration decreases along the cell sides. As a nutrient molecule enters the cell with a well defined number of protons via a channel called a symport, the influx of protons decreases when one moves away from the tip. Then the balance betwee...

The development of direct methanol fuel cells required the attention to the electrolyte. A good electrolyte should not only be ionic conductive but also be crossover resistant. Ionic liquids could be a promising electrolyte for fuel cells. Monitoring methanol was critical in several locations in a direct methanol fuel cell. Conductivity could be used to monitor the methanol content in ionic liq...

The whole-cell gigaseal voltage clamp technique has been used to investigate the timing of expression and type of voltage-dependent ionic currents in dissociated primary cultures of fetal rat (E17) diencephalic neurons grown in a serum-free defined medium. The expression of membrane currents varied among cells at any particular time in culture. Despite this variability, certain characteristics ...

Advances in the field of ionic liquids have opened new applications beyond their traditional use as solvents into other fields especially healthcare. The broad chemical space, rich with structurally diverse ions, and coupled with the flexibility to form complementary ion pairs enables task-specific optimization at the molecular level to design ionic liquids for envisioned functions. Consequentl...

BACKGROUND Oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathophysiology of atrial fibrillation (AF). The hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) mainly underlies the cellular oxidative stress and free radicals. Left atrium (LA) is the most important AF substrate. However, the effects of H2O2 on the action potential (AP) and ionic currents in LA myocytes have not been fully elucidated. METHODS The whole-c...

Infection of percutaneous biomaterials implants, such as fixation frames used for the repair of complicated fractures in orthopedics, is a major complication that almost inevitably leads to replacement of the implant. As antibiotic therapy usually has little impact on biomaterial-associated infections, it is the aim of this article to examine whether implant-associated Staphylococcus epidermidi...
