Let G be a torsion free discrete group with a finite dimensional classifying space BG. We show that G has a dual Dirac morphism if and only if a certain coarse (co)-assembly map is an isomorphism. Hence the existence of a dual Dirac morphism for such G is a metric, that is, coarse, invariant of G. We get similar results for groups with torsion as well. The framework that we develop is also suit...

Let G be a compact Lie group with H and K arbitrary closed subgroups. Let BG, BH, BK be /-universal classifying spaces, with p{H, G): BH -» BG the natural projection. Then transfer homomorphisms J\H, G): h(BH) -» h(BG) are defined for h an arbitrary cohomology theory. One of the basic properties of the transfer for finite coverings is a double coset formula. This paper proves a double coset the...

Let G be a discrete, torsion free group with a finite dimensional classifying space BG. We show that the existence of a γ-element for such G is a metric, that is, coarse, invariant of G. We also obtain results for groups with torsion. The method of proof involves showing that a group G possesses a γ-element if and only if a certain coarse (co)-assembly map is an isomorphism.

Do They Find You on Facebook? Facebook Profile Picture and Hiring Chances* We investigate whether the publicly available information on Facebook about job applicants affects employers’ hiring decisions. To this end, we conduct a field experiment in which fictitious job applications are sent to real job openings in Belgium. The only characteristic in which these candidates differ is the unique F...

Racial Harassment, Job Satisfaction and Intentions to Quit: Evidence from the British Nursing Profession This paper investigates the determinants of racial harassment at the workplace and its impact, via job satisfaction, on intentions to quit. Using data for ethnic minority nurses in Britain, we find that nearly 40% of nurses have experienced racial harassment from work colleagues, whilst more...

Job Loss Fears and (Extremist) Party Identification: First Evidence from Panel Data There is a large body of literature analyzing the relationship between objective economic conditions and voting behavior, but there is very little evidence of how perceived economic insecurity impacts on political preferences. Using seventeen years of household panel data from the German Socio-Economic Panel, we...

Wage Dispersion and Wage Dynamics Within and Across Firms This paper examines wage dispersion and wage dynamics in a stock-flow matching economy with on-the-job search. Under stock-flow matching, job seekers immediately become fully informed about the stock of viable vacancies. If only one option is available, monopsony wages result. With more than one firm bidding, Bertrand wages arise. The in...

More on Unemployment and Vacancy Fluctuations Shimer (2005a) argues that the Mortensen-Pissarides equilibrium search model of unemployment grossly under predicts the size of the response in the job finding rate to a productivity shock. Some of the recent papers inspired by his critique are reviewed and commented on here. Specifically, I suggest that the problem is not procyclicality of the wage...

We examine job creation and destruction in Eastern and Western Germany for the period of 1999 to 2004, using a large dataset, which enables us to capture clearly entries and exits. There are pronounced differences between the two parts of Germany in terms of magnitude and composition of gross job flows. Considering interaction effects between all variables, weighted regressions show that job cr...

We analyze the impact of job entry restrictions on the economic integration of recent ethnic German immigrants, using twelve waves of the German Socio-Economic Panel. The German labor market closely ties job accessibility to vocational education which likely hampers the transferability of foreign human capital. To assess this effect, we compare the job mismatch probabilities of ethnic German im...
