Noninvasive assessment of intestinal permeability in vivo is based on the measurement of urinary excretion of orally administered sugar probes. It is expressed as a ratio, usually lactulose/rhamnose or 3-O-methyl-D-glucose (3-OMG)/rhamnose. In both endotoxemic and control rats that were receiving fluid, we observed an increase in the recovery of lactulose and 3-OMG but not rhamnose in both grou...

Urinary excretion of orally administered lactulose and 51 chromium labelled ethylenediamine tetra-acetate (51Cr-EDTA) was measured in 12 healthy adult subjects and in six patients with ileostomies to assess intestinal permeability. In normal subjects, 24 hour urinary recovery of 51Cr-EDTA was significantly greater than that of lactulose (mean (SEM) 2.27 (0.15) v 0.50 (0.08)% oral dose; p less t...

We describe a new HPLC method for the simultaneous determination of lactulose and mannitol in urine, in which cation-exchange chromatography and evaporative light-scattering detection are used. The two sugars are orally administered for the estimation of intestinal permeability in children. Samples were purified by solid phase extraction on a C18 cartridge and subsequent addition of anion-excha...

The value of lactulose treatment in hepatic encephalopathy is widely recognised but its mode of action remains controversial. Much evidence supports a role for gamma-aminobutyric acid in hepatic encephalopathy, and lactulose could alter its bacterial production in the gut. Using the rat synaptic membrane assay and gas chromatography mass spectrometry, the production of gamma-aminobutyric acid b...

An oral solution containing lactulose and L-rhamnose was administered to six patients with cystic fibrosis. Intestinal absorption of both sugars was assessed by measurement of their urinary excretion. The lactulose: L-rhamnose excretion ratio was raised, supporting the hypothesis of an intestinal component to the malabsorption of cystic fibrosis.

Desirability and good background of yogurt have led the manufacturers to use this product mostly for producing milk-based probiotic products. The aim of this study was to evalutate the effect of a mixture of prebiotics including oligofructose, lactulose, and inulin on physicochemical properties (pH value, acidity, and syneresis) of synbiotic yogurt containing lactobacillus casei. Pasteurized mi...

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major public health problem that often goes unrecognized until late-stagedisease. Patients with chronic kidney disease face with uremic toxins and hyperkalemia. Also fluid overloadin CKD patients is associated with rapid decline in kidney function. Lactulose is a hyper osmotic agent andas a prebiotic plays an important role in regulating serum urea and potassiu...

BACKGROUND Chronic constipation is frequent in children. The objective of this study is to compare the efficacy and safety of PEG 4000 and lactulose for the treatment of chronic constipation in young children. METHODS This randomised, double-blind study enrolled 88 young children aged 12 to 36 months, who were randomly assigned to receive lactulose (3.3 g per day) or PEG 4000 (8 g per day) fo...

Time temperature integrators (TTIs) are useful tools in estimating the heat load applied on differently processed dairy products. The objective of this study was to analyze and assess three TTIs - lactulose, furosine, and acid-soluble β-lactoglobulin (β-Lg) - in 70 high heated dairy products at retail in Austria and Germany comprising whipping cream, coffee cream/milk, and condensed milk produc...

Aim. Lactulose/mannitol ratio is used to assess intestinal barrier function. Aim of this work was to develop a robust and rapid method for the analysis of lactulose and mannitol in urine by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. Lactulose/mannitol ratio has been measured in pediatric patients suffering from irritable bowel syndrome. Methods. Calibration curves and raffinose,...
