Myiasis is a rare disease caused by infestation of tissue by larvae of flies. Oral myiasis is still "rare" and "unique" owing to the fact that oral cavity rarely provides the necessary habitat for a larval lifecycle. Herein, we present a case of extensive gingival myiasis in a 12-year-old mentally retarded, epileptic child as well as a literature review.
Storm water drainage catch basins provide habitat to a variety of different aquatic organisms including arthropods, molluscs and annelid worms. Arthropods such as mosquitoes are known to use these environments as larval habitat. Because of health concerns, catch basins are often targeted for mosquito control exposing all inhabitants to pesticides such as methoprene or BTI. In this paper we desc...
Habitat characteristics were examined in two marshes and the littoral zones of two lakes in central Florida to determine their effect on the density and distribution of Coquillettidia perturbans. Larval and water samples were collected and habitat characteristics were recorded at monthly intervals for one year. Several significantly different physicochemical parameters were found between the ma...
In biological modeling, accurate modeling of the life cycle of an organism needs to account for the complexity of the organism, as well as the interactions between the organism and its environment. Mosquitoes are an organism commonly modeled as a vector for disease transmission. A wide range of habitats, depending on species and location, make mosquitoes an interesting and challenging organism ...

Japanese species of the genus Eobrachycentrus are revised, and only 2 species are recognized: E. vernalis (Banks 1906) and E. niigatai (Kobayashi 1968). Eobrachycentrus oharensis (Iwata 1927) and E. propinquus Wiggins et al. 1985 are synonymized with E. vernalis and E. niigatai, respectively. Adults and immature stages of these 2 species are described or redescribed. Information on the larval h...
Habitat use by animals often reflects the balance between conflicting demands such as foraging and avoiding predation. Environmental stressors such as temperature can also affect habitat use in many organisms, particularly in ectothermic animals. For example, warm, shallow thermal regimes in ponds can optimize growth and developmental rate of amphibian larvae but may also expose larvae to poten...
Metamorphosis in marine invertebrate larvae is a dynamic, environmentally dependent process that integrates ontogeny with habitat selection. The capacity of many marine invertebrate larvae to survive and maintain metamorphic competence in the absence of environmental cues has been hypothesized to be an adaptive convergence (Hadfield and others 2001). A survey of the literature reveals that a si...
Antarctic krill are a key species in the Southern Ocean ecosystem, and their life cycle appears to be correlated with, and by implication dependent upon, seasonal sea ice dynamics. Moving from correlations with environmental parameters to an understanding of the mechanisms that lead to these correlations may allow predictions of the consequences of climate change on the distribution of favourab...
Time-series data collected over a four-year period were used to characterize patterns of abundance for pelagic fishes in the northern Gulf of Mexico (GoM) before (2007-2009) and after (2010) the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Four numerically dominant pelagic species (blackfin tuna, blue marlin, dolphinfish, and sailfish) were included in our assessment, and larval density of each species was low...
