In this paper, two-section mode-locked lasers consisting of monolithic quantum dot gain and absorber sections are studied as a function of absorber voltage, injected current to the gain region, and relative section lengths. We map the regions of stable mode-locking as measured by the electrical and optical spectra. A simple algorithm is presented that evaluates the quality of mode locking and a...

We report the first demonstration of a solid state laser passively mode-locked through the saturable absorption of short-wavelength intersubband transitions in doped quantum wells: a continuous wave Ti:sapphire laser end-pumped Tm,Ho:YAG laser at the center wavelength of 2.091 mum utilizing intersubband transitions in narrow In(0.53)Ga(0.47)As/Al(0.53)As(0.47)Sb quantum wells. Stable passive mo...

We set up a general framework to study the bifurcations of nearly degenerate modes of a Maxwell-Bloch laser model, and we apply it specifically to the study of interactions of two modes of a laser with broken circular symmetry. We use an explicit centre manifold reduction to analyse the behaviour of this laser. Complex bifur-cation sequences involving single mode solutions, mode locking and mod...

Mode locking based on an epitaxial composite of the monoclinic double tungstate crystal Yb:KLu(WO4)2 is realized. A 100 microm thin Yb:KLu(WO4)2 layer grown on a KLu(WO4)2 substrate is used as an active medium in a laser passively mode locked by a semiconductor saturable absorber. Pulse durations of 114 fs have been achieved for an average power of 31 mW at 1030 nm. Results in the femtosecond a...

The onset of multi-pulsing, a ubiquitous phenomenon in laser cavities, imposes a fundamental limit on the maximum energy delivered per pulse. Managing the nonlinear penalties in the cavity becomes crucial for increasing the energy and suppressing the multi-pulsing instability. A Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) allows for the reduction of governing equations of a mode-locked laser onto a l...

The nonlinear reflectivity of semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors is investigated with ultrafast time-resolved and time-averaged reflectivity measurements. The relative contributions of absorption bleaching and induced absorption are studied as a function of fluence and wavelength. The impact of induced absorption on the stability of continuous-wave mode-locking is considered theoretically...

We demonstrate a high-power passively mode-locked Nd:YVO (4) laser that uses a saturable Bragg reflector (SBR) with strain relaxation. 23.5 W of average power with ~21.5-ps cw mode-locked pulse trains was generated at a 50-W pump power. Experimental results show that appropriate strain relaxation in the SBR makes the mode-locking operation less sensitive to temperature variation.

The synchronization of unidirectionally coupled multi-transverse-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) is numerically studied. It is demonstrated that synchronization can be achieved between each transverse mode of a master laser and its counterpart, a slave laser. This result opens the opportunity for multichannel chaotic communications by use of multi-transverse-mode VCSELs. I...

We report on efficient intracavity coherent addition of several single high-order mode distributions in a multichannel laser resonator. The phase locking and coherent addition is achieved by using an intracavity interferometric beam combiner. The principle, configuration, and experimental results with pulsed Nd:YAG Laguerre-Gaussian TEM01 and TEM02 laser beam distributions are presented. The re...

In new optical pulse generator using delayedinterference-signal-wavelength-converter (DISC)-type all-optical gate, we injected sinusoidally modulated light to ring cavity. With this way, externally modulated laser oscillation and mode-locked pulse laser oscillation occurred. These generated pulse’s widths and repetition frequencies are 27 ps, 10.5 GHz and 2.1 ps, 10.5 GHz, respectively. Keyword...
