BACKGROUND Dogs are the predominant domestic reservoir for human L. infantum infection. Zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (ZVL) is an emerging problem in some U.S. dog breeds, with an annual quantitative PCR prevalence of greater than 20% within an at-risk Foxhound population. Although classically Leishmania is transmitted by infected sand flies and phlebotomine sand flies exist in the United Sta...

We report here the characterization of a novel Leishmania infantum protein termed papLe22 (22-kDa potentially aggravating protein of Leishmania). A positive clone from a cDNA library was identified by serum of a visceral leishmaniasis (VL) patient. Full-length cDNA obtained using rapid amplification of cDNA ends-PCR codes for a 22-kDa protein. In L. infantum promastigotes an endogenous nuclear ...

background : miltefosine is a new drug of choice for the treatment of visceral leishmaniasis. numerous experimental studies have shown miltefosine is effective on leishmania donovani , however, effectiveness of miltefosine in treatment of l. infantum is not fully understood. the aims of the present study were to evaluate cytotoxic effects of miltefosine on iranian strain of l. infantum , and ...

In the present work, we have analyzed the antigenicity of Leishmania species ribosomal proteins (LRPs). To accomplish this, Leishmania infantum ribosomes were biochemically purified from promastigote cytosolic extracts, and their reactivities were analyzed by using the sera from dogs naturally infected with L. infantum. Since antibodies reacting against different ribosomal proteins were observe...

Dendritic cells (DC) play an important role in innate and adaptive immunity, interacting with T cells, NK, and NKT cells. A critical step in the interaction of the parasitic protozoa Leishmania with their host is the evasion of both innate and adaptive immunity, producing a long-lasting chronic infection. There is growing evidence that these parasites can modify the Ag-presenting and immunoregu...

The Algarve Region (AR) in southern Portugal, which is an international tourist destination, has been considered an endemic region of zoonotic leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania infantum since the 1980s. In the present study, phlebotomine and canine surveys were conducted to identify sandfly blood meal sources and to update the occurrence of Leishmania infection in vectors and dogs. Four sandfl...

This study aimed to evaluate the presence of antibodies against Neospora caninum, Toxoplasma gondii and Leishmania infantum in dogs attended at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Piauí, Northeastern Brazil, where there are no reports of the occurrence of N. caninum and T. gondii in dogs. Serum samples from 530 dogs of genders, different ages and breeds from the municipality of...

Antigenemia in patients with Mediterranean visceral leishmaniasis (MVL) due to Leishmania infantum was retrospectively assessed by sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Circulating Leishmania antigens, partially in free form, were in evidence in 53% of serum samples from immunocompetent individuals with MVL. Following successful therapy, antigenemia decline as measured by ELISA wa...

We present a case of a child with Leishmania infantum cutaneous leishmaniasis unresponsive to 2 courses of intravenous liposomal amphotericin B, a treatment failure that has not been reported in this Leishmania species. The patient responded to topical imiquimod and had no relapse. We review the literature on the treatment failure of liposomal amphotericin B for cutaneous leishmaniasis.
