In this study 160 samples of snails belonging to the species Helix aspersa maxima and Helix aspersa muller were examined for chemical and microbiological analysis. Samples came from Greece and Poland. Results showed mean concentration of cadmium (0.35±0.036 mg/kg) and lead (0.05±0.013 mg/kg) much higher than the limit of detection. Mercury levels in both species were not detected. Microbiologic...

The problem of locating local maxima and minima of a function from approximate measurement results is vital for many physical applications: in spectral analysis, chemical species are identified by locating local maxima of the spectra; in radioastronomy, sources of celestial radio emission and and their subcomponents are identified by locating local maxima of the measured brightness of the radio...

Experimental evidence for the existence of non-nuclear maxima in charge densities is questioned. It is shown that the non-nuclear maxima reported for silicon are artifacts of the maximum entropy method that was used to analyze the x-ray diffraction data. This method can be improved by the use of appropriate prior information. We report systematic tests of the improved method leading to the abse...

Introduction. During the last 3 years the present author made a series of works [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 6, 7, 9] dedicated to the study of the unusual spectral properties of low-dimensional continuous and discrete (difference) Schrodinger Operators. Some of these works were done in collaboration with A.Veselov, I.Taimanov and I.Dynnikov. First, let me briefly describe the list of problems discussed ...

We use self-organizing maps (SOM) as an efficient tool to find the minimum energy configurations of the 2-dimensional HP-models of proteins. The usage of the SOM for the protein folding problem is similar to that for the Traveling Salesman Problem. The lattice nodes represent the cities whereas the neurons in the network represent the amino acids moving towards the closest cities, subject to th...

Ozone profiles from balloon soundings as well as SAGE II ozone profiles were used to detect anomalous large ozone concentrations of ozone in the lower stratosphere. These secondary ozone maxima are found to be the result of differential advection of ozone-poor and ozone-rich air associated with Rossby wave breaking events. The frequency and intensity of secondary ozone maxima and their geograph...

We introduce and investigate approximations for the probability distribution of the maximum of n i.i.d. nonnegative random variables, in terms of the number n and the first few moments of the underlying probability distribution, assuming the distribution is unbounded above but does not have a heavy tail. Since the mean of the underlying distribution can immediately be factored out, we focus on ...
