Michelson-type laser-interferometric gravitational-wave (GW) observatories employ very high light powers as well as transmissively-coupled Fabry-Perot arm resonators in order to realize high measurement sensitivities. Due to the absorption in the transmissive optics, high powers lead to thermal lensing and hence to thermal distortions of the laser beam profile, which sets a limit on the maximal...
Atomic collision pairs in a light field form a microscopic interferometer. The light acts as the beam splitter and controls at the same time the amplitudes and phases of the interfering waves. We demonstrate the complete tunability using linear and elliptic polarization.
Improved online techniques for surface profile measurement can be beneficial in high/ultra-precision manufacturing, in terms of enabling manufacture and reducing costs. This paper introduces a spatially dispersed short-coherence interferometer sourced by a super luminescent diode. This technique uses a broadband light source, which is spatially dispersed across a surface using a reflective grat...
We demonstrate experimentally that the spectral sensitivity of an interferometer can be greatly enhanced by introducing a slow-light medium into it. The experimental results agree very well with theoretical predictions that the enhancement factor of the spectral sensitivity is equal to the group index n(g) of the slow-light medium.
A new signal processing algorithm for absolute temperature measurement using white light interferometry has been proposed and investigated theoretically. The proposed algorithm determines the phase delay of an interferometer with very high precision (.
All three LIGO detectors have reached their design sensitivities. A sky-averaged detection range (SNR > 8) of more than 15 Mpc for inspiral binary neutron stars with masses of 1.4 Msol has been achieved with the two 4 km instruments. The fifth LIGO science started in November 2005 and ended September 2007. About 365 days of coincidence data have been collected. The feedback controls system is a...
We have developed an interferometer requiring only minimal angular alignment for the routing of beams carrying orbital angular momentum. The Mach–Zehnder interferometer contains a Dove prism in each arm where each has a mirror plane around which the transverse phase profile is inverted. One consequence of the inversions is that the interferometer needs no alignment. Instead the interferometer d...
We apply a pulsed-light interferometer to measure both the intensity and the phase of light that is transmitted through a strongly scattering disordered material. From a single set of measurements we obtain the time-resolved intensity, frequency correlations and statistical phase information simultaneously. We compare several independent techniques of measuring the diffusion constant for diffus...
We review the field of atom interferometer inertial sensors. begin by reviewing path integral formulation interferometers and then specialize treatment to light-pulse and, in particular, gravimeters gyroscopes. The bulk article focuses on most common type – interferometer, where optics are composed light pulses. Our mainly a advances that aid practical implementation toward gravimetry navigatio...
We demonstrate an active laser heterodyne interferometer which can automatically compensate environmental disturbances and is capable of precision displacement measurement. Two Zeeman He-Ne lasers were employed. Laser II was used as the light source to stabilize the interferometer by using a piezomirror in a feedback loop. The hetereodyne signal of the two lasers was used to directly calibrate ...
