Local finite-time Lyapunov exponent, local sampling and probabilistic source and destination regions
In classic distributed graph problems, each instance on a graph specifies a space of feasible solutions (e.g. all proper (∆ + 1)-list-colorings of the graph), and the task of distributed algorithm is to construct a feasible solution using local information. We study distributed sampling and counting problems, in which each instance specifies a joint distribution of feasible solutions. The task ...
Particle filters provide a means to track the state of an object even when the dynamics and the observations are non-linear/nonGaussian. However, they can be very inefficient when the observation noise is low as compared to the system noise, as it is often the case in visual tracking applications. In this paper we propose a new two-stage sampling procedure to boost the performance of particle f...
Edge sampling is an important topic in network analysis. It provides a natural way to reduce network size while retaining desired features of the original network. Sampling methods that only use local information are common in practice as they do not require access to the entire network and can be parallelized easily. Despite promising empirical performance, most of these methods are derived fr...
In this paper, we prove undecidability and the lack of finite model property for a certain class of unimodal logics. To do this, we adapt the technique from [7], where products of transitive modal logics were investigated, for the unimodal case. As a particular corollary, we present an undecidable unimodal fragment of Halpern and Shoham’s Interval Temporal Logic.
Loss of a sensory modality elicits both unimodal changes in the deprived cortex and cross-modal alterations in the remaining sensory systems. Unimodal changes are proposed to recruit the deprived cortex for processing the remaining senses, while cross-modal changes are thought to refine processing of spared senses. Hence coordinated unimodal and cross-modal changes are likely beneficial. Despit...
The unimodal distributions are frequently used in the theorical statistical studies. But in applied statistics, there are many situations in which the unimodal distributions can not be fitted to the data. For example, the distribution of the data outside the control zone in quality control or outlier observations in linear models and time series may require to be a bimodal. These situations, oc...
Recent approaches to realistic image synthesis split the rendering process into two passes. The first pass calculates an approximate global illumination solution, the second produces an image of high quality (from a user selected view point) using the solution obtained in the first pass by applying the local illumination model to each surface point visible through each pixel. This paper present...
The generalized Replica Exchange Method (gREM) is extended into the isobaric-isothermal ensemble, and applied to simulate a vapor-liquid phase transition in Lennard-Jones fluids. Merging an optimally designed generalized ensemble sampling with replica exchange, gREM is particularly well suited for the effective simulation of first-order phase transitions characterized by "backbending" in the st...
