A novel front projection system is introduced for the purpose of material and color design. The system explores techniques for simulation of color on real objects lit by projectors. Choice of size, shape, and color of the target projection object is considered. Ambient lighting conditions are controlled, and a second projector is used as the light source. This permits the target projection obje...

We show that equivalent circuits offer a qualitative and even quantitative simple explanation for the behavior of various types of left-handed (or negative-index) metamaterials. This allows us to optimize design features and parameters while avoiding trial and error simulations or fabrications. In particular, we apply this unifying circuit approach in accounting for the features and in optimizi...

In this work we discuss an ontology design pattern for material transformations. It models the relation between products, resources, and catalysts in the transformation process. Our axiomatization goes beyond a mere surface semantics. While we focus on the construction domain, the pattern can also be applied to chemistry and other domains.

Biomaterials that interface with biological systems are used to deliver drugs safely and efficiently; to prevent, detect, and treat disease; to assist the body as it heals; and to engineer functional tissues outside of the body for organ replacement. The field has evolved beyond selecting materials that were originally designed for other applications with a primary focus on properties that enab...

From natural objects to man-made artifacts, tiling is all around us: it is the act of rationalizing highly complex form by breaking it up into smaller, continuous components. If well pursued, tiled objects can be easily designed and assembled. However, a geometric-centric view of tiling, whereby a predefined form determines the shape, size, and organization of tiles, has victimized the field of...
