We report on novel soluble macromolecules displaying rather peculiar solution behaviour, which allows us to gain full control of their partition into three mutually immiscible liquid media: water, dichloromethane and perfluoro(methylcyclohexane); such polymers may be used as soluble supports for reagents or catalysts, yielding supported species whose solubility preference for one out of three l...

The formation of both [2]- and [7]pseudorotaxanes, which are obtained by mixing of a dibenzylammonium derivative with mono- and hexakis-adducts of [60]fullerene bearing malonato-benzo[25]crown-8 rings, has been monitored in dichloromethane by both 1D and 2D (1)H NMR spectroscopies.

Communication about risks offers a voluntary approach to reducing exposure to pollutants. Its adequacy depends on its impact on behavior. Estimating those impacts first requires characterizing current activities and their associated risk levels, and then predicting the effectiveness of risk-reduction strategies. Characterizing the risks from chemical consumer products requires knowledge of both...

The synthesis of substituted dihydrooxazoles by the CuI-catalyzed cycloisomerization of terminal propargyl amides is reported. The reaction has been shown to have good substrate scope and experiments to delineate the mechanism have been performed. Substrates containing a benzylic methylene were oxidized to the ketone under the reaction conditions.

[reaction: see text] Tautomeric equilibria involving hydrogen migration in methylacenes were explored computationally using DFT methods. As the aromatic system becomes more extended, the methylene isomer is predicted to become favored. Reasonable-looking pericyclic sigmatropic hydrogen shifts are found to be energetically prohibitive, and bimolecular mechanisms involving radical pair intermedia...

Potential exposures among repair technicians engaged in vehicle resurfacing operations prior to spray painting have not been thoroughly characterized. Environmental and personal air monitoring conducted in the State of Rhode Island have shown that automotive repair technicians may be exposed to metal particulates in sanding dust and methylene chloride vapors during vehicle paint removal operati...

Five patients presented to the emergency department (ED) following exposure in an enclosed space to methylene chloride (dichloromethane), used for removing paint. Two workers and three rescuers were involved. Two rescuers complained only of dizziness and mild nausea, and were subsequently discharged from the ED. One rescuer was asymptomatic. Worker no. 1 arrived in cardiac arrest and eventually...

Methylene chloride (MeCl(2)) is a clear colorless volatile sweet smelling lipophilic solvent used as a constituent of wood vanishes and paints. Human exposure is mainly due to inhalation and its biotransformation by the hepatic mixed function oxidases (MFO) leads to formation of carbon monoxide (CO). Simultaneous exposure to MeCl(2) and increased ambient CO results in undesirably increased carb...

The cis-trans chloride isomerization of a ruthenium olefin metathesis catalyst is studied using quantum mechanics (B3LYP DFT), including the Poisson-Boltzmann (PBF) continuum approximation. The predicted geometries agree with experiment. The energies in methylene chloride, lead to DeltaG = -0.70 kcal/mol and a cis:trans ratio of 76:24, quite close to the experimental value of DeltaG = -0.78 kca...
