We demonstrate that a highly efficient global optimization of chirped mirrors can be performed with the memetic algorithm. The inherently high sensitivity of chirped-mirror characteristics to manufacturing errors can be reduced significantly by means of the stochastic quasi-gradient algorithm. The applicability of these algorithms is not limited to chirped mirrors.
For more than ten years, time reversal techniques have been developed in many different fields of applications including detection of defects in solids, underwater acoustics, room acoustics and also ultrasound medical imaging and therapy. The essential property that makes time reversed acoustics possible is that the underlying physical process of wave propagation would be unchanged if time were...
When compilers are reflective mirrors, interesting things happen. Reflection and compilers do tantalizing similar things. Yet, in mainstream, statically typed languages the two have been only loosely coupled, and generally share very little code. In this talk I explore what happens if one sets out to overcome their separation. The first half of the talk addresses the challenge how reflection li...
Nowadays adaptive optics (AO) is a very powerful technique for several scientific and technological applications, and with important economical perspectives. In the last decade, AO technology has fostered new solutions to improve adaptive components performance. While the scientific line has grown up quickly, AO has not experienced yet a wide spread commercial diffusion because a reasonable tra...

The importance of parallel corpora in machine translation research is widely recognized and undisputed. The amount of research on data-driven techniques in MT has grown tremendously since the introduction of the first automatic alignment techniques in the early 90’s that finally allowed to create large and reasonably clean bitexts from scratch without human interventions. Nowadays, it is imposs...
We have examined the correlations between direct surface-finish metrology techniques and normalincidence, soft x-ray reflectance measurements of highly polished x-ray multilayer mirrors. We find that, to maintain high reflectance, the rms surface roughness of these mirrors must be less than ~ 1 Å over the range of spatial frequencies extending approximately from 1 to 100 µm(-1)1 (i.e., spatial ...
Scattered light ampli cation by using multipass method is a very useful technique to increase Thomson and Rayleigh scattering signals for local plasma electron temperature and density measurements. Using Rayleigh scattering in nitrogen neutral gas chamber, the well-known technique of multipass system with two concentrical spherical mirrors is compared with new con guration by using two sets of ...
High-reflectivity fused silica mirrors are at the epicentre of today’s advanced gravitational wave detectors. In these detectors, the mirrors interact with high power laser beams. As a result of finite absorption in the high reflectivity coatings the mirrors suffer from a variety of thermal effects that impact on the detectors’ performance. We propose a model of the Advanced LIGO mirrors that i...
