A dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) fabricated by using a novel silyl-anchor coumarin dye with alkyl-chain substitutes, a Br3-/Br- redox electrolyte solution containing water, and a Mg2+-doped anatase-TiO2 electrode with twofold surface modification by MgO and Al2O3 exhibited an open-circuit photovoltage over 1.4 V, demonstrating the possibility of DSSCs as practical photovoltaic devices.

Carbon nanotube membranes have been shown to rapidly transport liquids; but progressive hydrophilic modification--contrary to expectations--induces a drastic reduction of water flow. Enhanced electrostatic interaction and the disruption of the mechanically smooth graphitic walls is the determinant of this behavior. These results have critical implications in the design of nanofluidic devices.

Highly impressionable electron spin was found in endohedral azafullerene Y(2)@C(79)N at low temperature or upon exohedral chemical modification. In our work the phenomena determining the performance of semiconductor devices are examined. We use computer simulations based on semi-classical drift-diffusion model. Our aim is to numerically solve a system of three nonlinear elliptic differential equations. For computations, we use a coupled Newton method, with a modification taking advantage of a simple iteration.
