Abstract—An effective way of providing error resilience with a relatively small reduction in compression ratio is multiple description coding (MDC). All multiple description codes to date assume the existence of multiple independent “on-off” channels between the transmitter and receiver. Each link is either broken in which case the symbols or packets are completely lost, or it functions properl...
Multiple description coding (MDC) has received a lot of interest lately, because it allows to split one source of information in multiple entities, where each of the entities is decodable in a stand–alone fashion. The more of these entities are received the more information of the original source can be restored. This opens the door for new applications in many fields of mobile communications. ...
Multiple description coding has been shown to provide improved error resiliency for video streaming over error-prone channels. In a typical multiple description codec, the decoder simply reproduces the signal using the received description(s). The optimal reconstruction is obtained from the available description in the sense that the mean squared error is minimized. However, this reconstruction...
In this paper, we present a method of creating domain-based multiple descriptions of images and video. These descriptions are created by partitioning the transform domain of the signal into sets whose points are maximally separated from each other. This property enables simple error concealment methods to produce good estimates of lost signal samples. We present the approach in the context of I...
We propose a multiple description coding scheme based on the quantization splitting method. This scheme is able to achieve the whole EGC region. For the Gaussian source, we show that any rate pair on the dominant face of the EGC region is achievable with three or fewer lattice quantizers.
A low complexity M-channel multiple description coding scheme is developed in this paper, in which each description carries one subset of the input with a higher bit rate and the rest with a lower bit rate. The lower-rate codings in different descriptions are designed to be mutually refinable using staggered scalar quantizers. For correlated sources, a two-rate predictive coding is used in each...
We propose in this paper a multiple description coding system by computing projections of information elements. With a complete adequation between projections and packets, we can use it over present erasure channel. Any projection reception contributes in a same way to original information reconstruction. Moreover the system can allocate level of priority for each source layer adding a multi-le...
Layered (LC) and multiple description coding (MDC) have been proposed as source coding techniques that are robust to channel errors for video transmission. LC and MDC have similar characteristics: they both generate multiple sub-bitstreams, and it is permissible to drop some portion of the data from the sub-bitstreams during transmission for both methods. However, they are different in the sens...
We use unequal amounts of explicit channel coding for generalized multiple description coding. Our solution can use any progressive source coder and it disperses information equally among the descriptions. Image quality improves gradually with the number of received descriptions. Our approach surpasses previously published results by a signiicant margin.
MIMO-OFDM is a promising technique for the broadband wireless communication system. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme that integrates multiple-description coding (MDC), error-resilient video coding, and unequal error protection strategy with hybrid space-time coding structure for robust video transmission over MIMO-OFDM system. The proposed MDC coder generates multiple bitstreams of equa...
