Numerous cracks can be observed in the top coat of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) deposited by the atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) method. These cracks can be classified into vertical and horizontal ones and they have opposite impact on the properties of TBCs. Vertical cracks reduce the residual stress in the top coat and provide strain tolerance. On the contrary, horizontal cracks trigger d...

The numerical construction of a Green’s function for multiple interacting planar cracks in an anisotropic elastic space is considered. The numerical Green’s function can be used to obtain a special boundary integral method for an important class of two-dimensional elastostatic problems involving planar cracks in an anisotropic body.

This work verifies that the W foil could be successfully welded on Cu through conventional explosive welding, without any cracks. The microstructure was observed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS). The W/Cu interface exhibited a wavy morphology, and no intermetallic or transition layer was observed. The wavy interface fo...

We present a motion-based method to extract the multiple 3D crack surfaces from a sequence of 3D X-ray microtomographic mortar images. We verify the correctness and accuracy of results by ground truth obtained with simulated cracks in real specimens. We provide several three-dimensional measures of crack surface, including the number of cracks, surface area, volume, tortuosity, and permeability.

We investigate the roughening of shear cracks running along the interface between a thin film and a rigid substrate. We demonstrate that short-range correlated fluctuations of the interface strength lead to self-affine roughening of the crack front as the driving force (the applied shear stress/stress intensity factor) increases towards a critical value. We investigate the disorder-induced pert...
