The west coast of subtropical South America is characterized by a semi-arid climate and very persistent southerly winds that often exhibit a low-level jet structure. The nearly alongshore flow forces coastal and offshore upwelling of cold, nutrient-rich waters, thus supporting one of the most productive marine ecosystems in the world and a wealth of fishery resources. Therefore, the evaluation ...

The dynamicalmechanisms underlying the transient circulation adjustment in the extratropical atmosphere after the instantaneous doubling of carbon dioxide are investigated using the National Center for Atmospheric Research Community Atmosphere Model version 3 coupled to a Slab Ocean Model. It is shown that the transient process during the first few months of integration is important in setting ...

BACKGROUND Influenza has been associated with heavy burden of mortality and morbidity in subtropical regions. However, timely forecast of influenza epidemic in these regions has been hindered by unclear seasonality of influenza viruses. In this study, we developed a forecasting model by integrating multiple sentinel surveillance data to predict influenza epidemics in a subtropical city Shenzhen...

climatological study of the mid-latitude storm tracks was investigated using the daily global forecast system (gfs) and the national centers for environmental prediction (ncep) reanalysis data sets from 1948 to 2008 winter seasons. in anomalous winter 2007-2008, decreasing of eddy kinetic energy along with the reduction of eddy available potential energy upstream of atlantic storm track are rel...

We study the orientation of accretion disks, traced by the position angle of the jet, relative to the dust disk major axis in a sample of 20 nearby Radio Galaxies. We find that the observed distribution of angles between the jet and dust disk major axis is consistent with jets homogeneously distributed over a polar cap of 77◦.

The study diagnoses the relative impacts of the four known tropical Indo-Pacific drivers, namely, El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), ENSO Modoki, Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), and Indian Ocean Basin-wide mode (IOBM) on African seasonal rainfall variability. The canonical El Niño and El Niño Modoki are in general associated with anomalous reduction (enhancement) of rainfall in southern (northern)...

A theoretical model of a volcanic plume, based on applying the equations of motion in a plume-centered coordinate system, suggests that the interaction between a volcanic plume and wind causes enhanced entrainment of air and horizontal momentum, plume bending, and a decrease in plume rise height at constant eruption rate. Because of rapid dilution in the high windspeeds of the polar jet, plumes...

The Quasi-biennial Oscillation (QBO) dominates the interannual variability of tropical stratosphere and influences other regions atmosphere. high predictability QBO implies that its teleconnections could lead to increased skill seasonal decadal forecasts provided relevant mechanisms are accurately represented in models. Here modelling sampling uncertainties examined using a multi-model ensemble...
