INTRODUCTION Interactions of the ceria particles with polyurethane surfaces are of great interest for polishing processes used in modern semiconductor industry. Specifically, ceria abrasive nanoparticles and polyurethane polishing pads are now broadly used in the process called Chemical-Mechanical Planarization/Polishing (CMP) [1,2,3]. To optimize the process of CMP, various chemicals, abrasive...

The first target of any therapy for retinal neurodegeneration is to slow down the progression of the disease and to maintain visual function. Cerium oxide or ceria nanoparticles reduce oxidative stress, which is known to play a pivotal role in neurodegeneration. Our aim was to investigate whether cerium oxide nanoparticles were able to mitigate neurodegeneration including microglial activation ...

This paper demonstrates the key role of the property-structure relationship of the support on iron/ceria catalysts on the hydrocarbon selectivity and olefin-to-paraffin ratio for the direct hydrogenation of carbon dioxide into hydrocarbons. The effect is directly related to the reducibility of the different nanostructured ceria supports and their interaction with the iron particles. Herein, we ...

Copper oxide supported on ceria has been investigated for the selective hydrogenation of octadecanoic acid to octadecanol. At reaction conditions of 5 bar H2 at 250 C, 75 % alcohol yield with 100 % selectivity can be achieved. The Cu species formed under the experimental conditions and ceria support likely show synergy for the selective hydrogenation of acids into alcohols.

The structural, chemical and electronic changes of ceria as a function of decreasing particle size have been studied: at sizes below 5 nm the total amount of reducible oxygen dramatically increases due to superoxide formation on the ceria surface, a result indicative of a size dependent oxygen buffering capacity.

An important part of fundamental research in catalysis is based on theoretical and modeling foundations which are closely connected with studies of single-crystalline catalyst surfaces. These so-called model catalysts are often prepared in the form of epitaxial thin films, and characterized using advanced material characterization techniques. This concept provides the fundamental understanding ...

Cu-based, solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) electrodes were modified by electrodeposition of Co. The addition of only 5-vol% Co by electrodeposition significantly improved the thermal stability compared to either Cu-ceriaYSZ, Cu-Co-ceria-YSZ, or Co-ceria-YSZ electrodes prepared only by impregnation with much higher metal loadings, demonstrating that electrodeposited metal layers form metal films wit...

Beyond the traditional use of ceria as an abrasive, the scope of nanoceria applications now extends into fuel cell manufacturing, diesel fuel additives, and for therapeutic intervention as a putative antioxidant. However, the biological effects of nanoceria exposure have yet to be fully defined, which gave us the impetus to examine its systemic biodistribution and biological responses. An exten...

In recent years, nanostructured Au catalysts have attracted a lot of attention as potential candidates for the removal of poisonous carbon monoxide from synthesis gas streams, thus upgrading hydrogen gas to be used as fuel at the anode of lowtemperature fuel cells. The interest in Au nanoparticles has been motivated by the pioneering work of Haruta et al., who demonstrated the extremely high ac...
