Magnetic resonance (MR) and computed tomography (CT) imagings were compared in 121 patients with various neurologic diseases. MR was performed with either 0.15 Tesla resistive or 2.0 Tesla superconducting systems developed by Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), using multi-slice spin echo technique with a variety of pulse sequences reflecting proton density, T1 and T2 re...

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis is an important component of the diagnostic evaluation of patients with neurologic diseases, and abnormalities in the color, cellularity, and protein level of the CSF may contribute to or confirm the diagnosis. Cerebrospinal fluid abnormalities have to be viewed in the context of the neurologic examination, historical complaints, clinical findings, advanced im...

Congenital Methemoglobinemia is a rare neurologic condition which can mimic other diseases such as epilepsy syndromes and leukodystrophies. The responsible gene, CYB5R3, is not typically included on commonly order neurologic and epilepsy panels. We recommend that laboratories include this gene on these tests which often precede larger-scale genetic studies.

What makes CNS injury by pathogens different from other CNS afflictions such as stroke or Alzheimer’s Disease is well illustrated in the manuscripts of this volume. We will see that viral, bacterial, or prion-induced injuries are dynamic and varied. No two infection cases are the same due to host or agent factors. We will encounter pathogens that are shared with other species and some that rang...

Introduction Loss of smell is involved in various neurologic and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson disease and Alzheimer disease. However, the olfactory test is usually neglected by physicians at large. Objective The aim of this study was to review the current literature about the relationship between olfactory dysfunction and neurologic and neurodegenerative diseases. Data Synthesi...

BACKGROUND Tissue gene expression profiling with arrays measures the transcription of thousands of genes. However, this approach cannot be readily used to guide clinical neurologic practice. OBJECTIVES To determine whether clinical neurologic diseases are associated with unique patterns of up- and down-regulated genes in whole blood and to explore the possibility of using peripheral blood as ...

BACKGROUND Age and rate of acoustic stimulation affect peak latencies in brainstem auditory evoked responses (BAER) in humans. Those effects are unknown in foals. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES Our goals were to (1) establish reference values for BAER in foals by using 3 different stimulation protocols, (2) evaluate the effects of age and stimulation frequencies on BAER tracing in foals up to 6 months...
