N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-mediated polymerizations of N-butyl N-carboxyanhydride (Bu-NCA) to produce cyclic poly(N-butyl glycine)s (c-NHC-PNBGs) have been investigated in various solvents with NHCs having differing steric and electronic properties. Control over the polymer molecular weight (MW) and polymerization rate is strongly dependent on the solvent and the NHC structure. Kinetic studie...

Convenient syntheses of mono- and bis-imidazolium 1,3,5-triazine derivatives bearing piperidine and morpholine substituents are reported. In situ deprotonation of the mono-imidazolium salts and reaction with Ag2O or Au(tht)Cl (tht = tetrahydrothiophene) precursors affords the corresponding Ag(NHC)Cl and Au(NHC)Cl carbene complexes. In the presence of Ag(I) or Au(I) salts the bis-imidazolium pin...

A gold(I) N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complex mediated hydroamination of an alkyne has been modeled using density functional theory (DFT) study. In this regard, alkyne and amine coordination pathways have been investigated for the hydroamination reaction between two representative substrates, namely, MeC≡CH and PhNH(2), catalyzed by a gold(I) NHC based (NHC)AuCl-type precatalyst, namely, [1,3-...

In transitionmetal-catalysed reactions the accessibility of the catalyst is one of the most important factors in dictating the usefulness of any catalyticmethod. The development of catalytic systems based on inexpensive metals such as iron and copper have gained increased attention during the last few years. In this context, N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) copper species of the type [Cu(X)(NHC)] (...

The facile synthesis of a new 3-hydroxyadamantyl-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand and its corresponding rhodium complex [Rh(NHC)(COD)Cl] is described. This features an unusually large yaw distortion angle (θ = 6.8°) for monodentate NHC species, which attributed to unsymmetrical nature the steric imbalance between two wingtips. comprehensive analysis angles in 85 related Rh spe...

A convergent, catalytic asymmetric formal [4 + 2] annulation for the synthesis of dihydroquinolones has been developed. Carboxylic acids can be employed as precursors to NHC enolates through an in situ activation strategy. Simultaneous generation of a reactive aza-o-quinone methide under the basic conditions employed for NHC generation leads to a dual activation approach.

A chiral N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalyzed formal [4 + 2] annulation of β-methyl substituted enals with isatins was developed to construct six-membered spirolactones bearing highly congested quaternary carbon stereocentersin good yields and high enantioselectivities. The strategy realized a challenging remote γ-carbon addition of enals and chiral control of β-methyl substituted enals in th...

An unprecedented N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalyzed Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) reaction of β-substituted nitroalkenes and azodicarboxylates has been developed. Both β-aryl and β-alkyl nitroalkenes worked well for the reaction using 5 mol% of NHC catalyst, giving the desired α-hydrazino-α,β-unsaturated nitroalkenes in good to excellent yields.

New DKR type: An N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalyzed dynamic kinetic resolution of racemic α-substituted β-keto esters has been developed. This method relies on the epimerization of an NHC-enol intermediate before subsequent aldol/acylation events. Highly substituted β-lactones are produced in good yield with good to excellent selectivities (see scheme).

A facile and efficient synthetic route leading to catalytically relevant N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) gold complexes is described. The method consists of one pot synthesis starting from readily available imidazolium salts and [AuCl(tht)], in the presence of K2CO3. Using the same protocol NHC silver complexes have been synthesised starting from AgNO3.
