Nocardia spp. are rarely isolated in extrapulmonary clinical specimens. We describe the first case of olecranon bursitis caused by Nocardia asiatica. The patient, a traveler returning from Thailand, was successfully treated with linezolid.
Rifampin was glycosylated by a pathogenic species of Nocardia, i.e., Nocardia brasiliensis. The structures of two glycosylated compounds (RIP-1 and RIP-2) isolated from the culture broth of the bacterium were determined to be 3-formyl-23-(O-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl])rifamycin SV and 23-(O-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl])rifampin, respectively. Both compounds lacked antimicrobial activity against other gr...
Pericarditis with hemodynamic compromise is a rare manifestation of infection with Nocardia asteroides. To our knowledge, only six cases have been reported previously. In contrast to other cases of pericardial disease due to Nocardia, culture of the pericardial fluid in our case was negative while culture of pericardial tissue led to the diagnosis. Surgical intervention and appropriate antibiot...
Presence of fungal agents in lesions of two patients in Tehran was studied. One of them had clinical symptoms of mycetoma in his foot, and the other had a skin infection in his arm. Examination of the lesions indicated Nocardia asteroides. These patients did not show any evidence of nocardia infection in other parts of the body. Negative results were obtained from the cultures of blood and...
PURPOSE The goals of the study were the following: 1) to show the epidemiology of microbial keratitis (MK) in the southeast Brazil, 2) to compare the epidemiological differences between fungal (FK) and bacterial keratitis (BK), and 3) to evaluate the frequency which ophthalmologists accurately differentiate bacterial keratitis from fungal keratitis based on clinical diagnosis. METHODS A retro...
Introduction Contact lens wearing has been increased globally during recent decades, which is one of the main risk factors for developing microbial keratitis. Microbial keratitis a severe and dangerous condition that causes cornea inflammation. It can lead to corneal scarring perforation or even endophthalmitis visual loss if it remains untreated. Among bacterial, fungal, protozoal, viral agent...
© 2017 Advanced Biomedical Research | Published by Wolters Kluwer Medknow Sir, We read with interest article that published (Adv Biomed Res 2014; 3:151) by Faghri J et al. entitled *comparison of three phenotypic and deoxyribonucleic acid extraction methods for isolation and Identification of Nocardia spp.* however, authors and researchers should be noted that: 1. According to the literature, N...
Cell extracts prepared by ultrasonic disruption of 17 strains of the 'rhodochrous' complex and related taxa were compared by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and for immunologic relatedness, by skin test reactions. Two organisms, Jensenia canicruria and Nocardia calcarea, gave similar gel patterns and skin test reactions, and are considered to be identical. Extracts of nocardia rubra showed a...
Kwapinski, J. B. (University of New England, Armidale, N.S.W., Australia). Antigenic structure of Actinomycetales. VI. Serological relationships between antigenic fractions of Actinomyces and Nocardia. J. Bacteriol. 86:179-186. 1963.-A total of 52 chemical fractions were obtained by a comprehensive technique of preparation from three strains of Actinomyces and three strains of Nocardia. The che...
AIM This study aims to describe the clinical features and management of Nocardia scleritis. METHODS The authors retrospectively reviewed medical charts of three patients with microbiologically proven Nocardia scleritis and reviewed literature. RESULTS All the patients presented with areas of well-demarcated, circumscribed abscess. No specific clinical feature could be attributed to the caus...
