We study the interaction of an optical vortex soliton with a dark-soliton stripe in a bulk nonlinear defocusing medium. We develop a multiscale asymptotic theory to predict the main effect of the interaction and then study it experimentally, observing vortex-induced stripe bending, development of the transverse instability, and stripe breakup.

Koiter’s shell model is derived systematically from nonlinear elasticity theory, and shown to furnish the leading-order model for small thickness when the bending and stretching energies are of the same order of magnitude. An extension of Koiter’s model to finite midsurface strain emerges when stretching effects are dominant.

A new kind of optical bistability is discussed that is based on mutual self-action of light beams in a nonlinear medium. In particular, fundamentally new devices are proposed that use two counterpropagating incident beams and no reflection feedback. Self-focusing (or self-defocusing) and self-bending provide bistability with positive or negative nonlinearity.

Simple models of the vibrational dynamics of HOOH and CH3OOCH3 are investigated by classical trajectory methods. Nonlinear resonances due to kinematic coupling between the torsional motion and symmetric bond bending are found to have significant dynamical effects in some cases. The timescales and magnitudes of these energy transfer processes are examined.
