Expression of the lux-genes cloned in the recombinant plasmid pPHL7 (Ap r Lux + ) in Escherichia coli Z905 cells was studied in various environments, including model aquatic ecosystems. Expression of the lux-genes strongly depended on the nutritional status of the medium. In particular, the cultivation of cells in nutrient-rich medium favored the maintenance of the initial level of expression o...

Nutrient availability is one of the strongest determinants of cell size. When grown in rich media, single-celled organisms such as yeast and bacteria can be up to twice the size of their slow-growing counterparts. The ability to modulate size in a nutrient-dependent manner requires cells to: (1) detect when they have reached the appropriate mass for a given growth rate and (2) transmit this inf...

The effects of variations in nutrient cation levels on the growth and biochemistry of Chlorella were investigated. This study involved concentration-series experiments in which the levels of Mg(2+), K(+), and Ca(2+) varied from deficiency to toxicity levels for growth. The nutrient sufficiency concentrations of Mg(2+) and K(+) were 0.08 and 0.10 meq/1, respectively. Deficiencies of Mg(2+) or K(...

Growing cells are subject to cycles of nutrient depletion and repletion. A shortage of nutrients activates a starvation program that promotes growth in limiting conditions. To examine whether nutrient-deprived cells prepare also for their subsequent recovery, we followed the transcription program activated in budding yeast transferred to low-phosphate media and defined its contribution to cell ...

this study was conducted to choose the best species for plantation on a poor drainage soil in southern coast of caspian sea, iran. nutrient concentrations in live and senescent leaves and soil properties were compared among alnus subcordata c.a.mey (n-fixing tree), populus deltoides marsh. (non n-fixing tree)and taxodium distichum (l.) rich. (coniferous tree) plantations. in each of these plan...

Lanthanum oxide nanoparticles were utilized to scavenge phosphate from microbial growth media for the use of targeted nutrient starvation as an antimicrobial strategy. Only in phosphate poor environments a toxic effect was observed. The effect was shown on Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus carnosus, Penicillium roqueforti, and Chlorella vulgaris.

Recent studies claiming to revive ancient microorganisms trapped in fluid inclusions in halite have warranted an investigation of long-term microbial persistence. While starvation-survival is widely reported for bacteria, it is less well known for halophilic archaea-microorganisms likely to be trapped in ancient salt crystals. To better understand microbial survival in fluid inclusions in ancie...

The mold Aureobasidium pullulans was isolated on several nutrient media from a splenic abscess in a patient with disseminated lymphoma. Examination of stained smears and paraffin sections revealed fungal structures characteristic of this organism. This is the first reported association of A. pullulans with an opportunistic visceral infection.

A new medium, pseudomonas selective isolation agar, was developed to isolate Pseudomonas spp. from water. It consists of 350 micrograms of nitrofurantoin per ml and 2 micrograms of crystal violet per ml in a nutrient agar base. It is more selective for Pseudomonas spp. than are available commercial media. Its ingredients are inexpensive and readily available, and it is easy to prepare.

Paecilomyces lilacinus has potential for pests control. We aimed to analyze mycelial growth and spore production in P. lilacinus strains in several agro-industrial residues and commercial media. This study suggests alternative nutrient sources for fungi production and that the biotechnological potential of agro-industrial refuses could be employed in byproducts development.
