The latest results in ultrafast data regeneration and wavelength conversion with SMZ-type all-optical semiconductor switches are reviewed. In these operations, the SMZ-type switch is driven by random data pulses. The fastest bit rate reported to date for such input-data-driven all-optical operation has reached 168 Gb/s. With these all-optical devices, we may be able to build 160-Gb/s OTDM nodes...
All-optical packet switching has been intensively investigated in recent years as an alternative to static, crossconnect based networks. Several switch architectures have been proposed, all of them using buffers made of fibre delay lines. This paper addresses the basic concepts of the packet switching in the optical domain and describes an analytical approach to evaluate the end-to-end performa...
The load balanced Birkhoff–von Neumann switch is an elegant VOQ architecture with two outstanding characteristics: (i) it has a computational cost of Oð1Þ iterations and (ii) input controllers do not exchange information (as a result, it allows decoupled implementations with a low power density). The load balancing stage guarantees stability under a broad class of traffic patterns. It may alter...
Optical-packet switching is an attractive technology geared towards integration of data and optical networking. The immense bandwidth provided by optical networking and the capability to switch packets directly at the optical layer are a powerful combination for the Next Generation Internet where scalability, agility, and performance are important considerations. Early optical-packet switching ...
In order to support efficiently the fast-growing demand for transmission capacity, optical packet-switched systems seem to be strong candidates as they allow fast dynamic allocation of WDM channels combined with a high degree of statistical resource sharing. In this work, we propose the architecture of an input/shared-buffered optical packet switching node, for all-optical switching of IP traff...
The theory of phase-shifted nonlinear periodic structures operating in the stationary regime is presented. The transmissive properties of the structure are analyzed by solution of the corresponding set of nonlinear coupledmode equations exactly. Extremely low switching intensities are found for the special case of ly4-shifted structures. An all-optical low-intensity switching configuration that...
We propose a novel optical switching system equipped with shared wavelength converters with electrical buffers. Simulation results show that the proposed system significantly reduces the blocking probability below 10−6 with low buffering delay. We present benefits of the proposed switching system compared with the conventional dedicated wavelength converter scheme in terms of blocking probabili...
The prime objective of the EPSRC-funded OPSnet project is the design and demonstration of an asynchronous DWDM optical packet switch (OPS) capable of directly carrying IP packets over DWDM-based core networks at transport rates in the order of 100 Gb/s and above. To achieve such an objective demands a highly flexible and innovative core switch architecture. The operation and performance of such...
A model is reported allowing one to investigate the TCP/IP performance of a Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) base switch with 10x10Gbps wavelength striped traffic. Bit Error Rate measurements and Packet Error Rate equivalences were assessed to demonstrate TCP throughput analysis in a cascaded SOA for an optical link.
