A total of 106 clinical isolates of flavobacteria, including 41 isolates of Flavobacterium meningosepticum, 59 of Flavobacterium indologenes, and 6 of Flavobacterium odoratum were collected from January 1992 to December 1995 from patients in Taiwan. The in vitro activities of antimicrobial agents were determined concomitantly by the standard agar dilution and disk diffusion methods. More than 9...

INTRODUCTION We report the seventh case of Chryseobacterium indologenes occurring in the United States of America. C. indologenes is seldom isolated from clinical specimens but has caused hospital-acquired infections in Taiwan and rarely elsewhere. CASE PRESENTATION A 32-year-old Caucasian woman with metastatic breast cancer presented to a hospital emergency department with bilateral radiatio...

Pantoea stewartii SW2 contains 13 plasmids. One of these plasmids, pSW200, has a replicon that resembles that of ColE1. This study demonstrates that pSW200 contains a 9-bp UP element, 5'-AAGATCTTC, which is located immediately upstream of the -35 box in the RNAII promoter. A transcriptional fusion study reveals that substituting this 9-bp sequence reduces the activity of the RNAII promoter by 7...

A primary determinant of pathogenicity in Erwinia stewartii is the production of extracellular polysaccharide (EPS). A single mutation can abolish both EPS synthesis and pathogenicity; both properties are restored by a single cosmid clone. Subcloning and insertion analysis have defined a single positive regulatory function which shares a number of similarities with the rcsA function of Escheric...

Chryseobacterium indologenes is a non-fermentative Gram-negative bacillus that is a rare pathogen in humans. Its occurrence in diabetic children has not been previously reported. In this report, a case is described of C. indologenes bacteraemia possibly associated with the use of a peripheral venous catheter. A 2-year-old boy with type I diabetes mellitus was admitted due to a coma caused by ce...

The class B carbapenem-hydrolyzing beta-lactamase IND-1 has been characterized for Chryseobacterium indologenes strain 001. With internal primers for the bla gene for IND-1 (bla(IND-1)) and an internal bla(IND-1) probe, PCR amplifications failed, while hybridization results were positive when DNA from another C. indologenes isolate, strain CIP101026, was used as a template. Thus, a bla(IND)-rel...

Chryseobacterium indologenes is an uncommon pathogen of human disease and is usually associated with indwelling devices or immunocompromised hosts. We report here an unusual case of C. indologenes peritonitis in an oncological patient with malignant ascites. The patient was treated successfully by trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole without removal of the catheter.

BACKGROUND Chryseobacterium indologenes is an emerging opportunistic pathogen in hospital-acquired infection, which is intrinsically resistant to most antimicrobial agents against gram-negative bacteria. In the purpose of extending our understanding of the resistance mechanism of C. indologenes, we sequenced and analyzed the genome of an extensively antibiotic resistant C. indologenes strain, i...
