Hemangioma, also known as hemangioendothelioma, is the most common parotid gland tumor in childhood. Girls are affected 3 times more frequently than boys [1]. They are usually not noticed in the newborn period but become prominent in the first months of life [2]. The...

Polyomaviruses (PyVs) are known to infect a wide range of vertebrates and invertebrates and are associated with a broad spectrum of diseases, including cancers, particularly in immune-suppressed hosts. A novel polyomavirus, designated rat polyomavirus 2 (RatPyV2), was identified from a breeding colony of rats having X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency. Using a human panpolyomavirus immuno...

Type 2 diabetes mellitus represents one of the principal diseases that afflict the world population and is often associated with malfunction of salivary glands and consequent oral diseases. INTRODUCTION Benign tumours of the parotid gland constitute about 80% of parotid tumours. The most common benign tumour of the parotid gland is pleomorphic adenoma. Other conditions, like Kimura's disease, may mimic a tumour when they present as a parotid mass. Various modes of treatment have been advocated for the treatment of benign parotid lesions, ranging from enucleation to near-total paro...

OBJECTIVE Facial nerve preservation and oncological safety are crucial in surgery of parotid tumors. An unexpected histopathologic diagnosis of a malignant parotid tumor, however, may unfavorably require a second, more radical surgery. The aim of this study was to find out whether the assessment of serological tumor markers in parotid saliva might have some diagnostic significance in the preope...

Nicotine has been reported to increase the intracellular Ca(2+) concentration ([Ca(2+)](i)) in sublingual acini due to neurotransmitter release from nerve terminals associated with the cell preparation (1). However, it is unclear whether or not the same reaction exists in parotid cells. Therefore, we investigated effect of nicotine on Ca(2+) mobilization in digested parotid acini from rats. Aft...

Tannins are plant-derived polyphenolic compounds that are widely found in foods, particularly in fruits and beverages. These materials are water-soluble and able to precipitate proteins from aqueous solutions. It had been shown that feeding some animals such as rat and mouse with tannins mimicks the effects of isoproterenol on salivary glands. Tannins stimulate β-receptors by some indirect me...

Lipoma rarely involves parotid gland especially in children. An 11-year-old boy presented with right parotid swelling. Preoperative workup including CT scan and FNAC gave suspicion of parotid gland lipoma. The diagnosis was confirmed on histopathology after complete excision of the mass.

A 67-year-old male with three synchronous tumors in the unilateral parotid gland is reported. Postoperative histological examinations confirmed the presence of three synchronous primary tumors, specifically pleomorphic adenoma, Warthin's tumor and salivary duct carcinoma, in the right parotid gland. To our knowledge, this is the first case report describing three different histological types in...

Blunt trauma to the parotid gland is extremely rare and requires considerable force. We present a unique case in which a child sustained parotid injury without any associated injury to the facial skeleton, parotid gland and ductal structures and managed successfully. A literature search revealed that this type of injury has not been reported previously.
