In this paper, we propose a novel framework for abnormal event detection in crowded scenes. A new concept of atomic event is introduced into this framework, which is the basic component of video events. Different from previous bag-of-words (BoW) modeling-based methods that represent feature descriptors using only one code word, a feature descriptor is represented using a few more atomic events ...
abstract this study aimed at investigating the effect of bilingual teaching of cognate words (persian-english) on iranian upper intermediate efl learners’ knowledge of lexical development. for this purpose,100 subjects participated in this study out of which 40 learners were selected for this study and they were assigned into two groups, control and experimental. cross-language cognates (wor...
The classifying of words according to syntactic usage is basic to language handling; this paper describes an algorithm for automatically classifying words according to thirteen commonly used parts of speech: noun, adjective, verb, past verb, adverb, preposition, conjunction, pronoun, interjection, present participle, past participle, auxiliary verb, and plural or collective noun. The algorithm ...
We present a method for extracting parts of objects from wholes (e.g. "speedometer" from "car"). Given a very large corpus our method finds part words with 55% accuracy for the top 50 words as ranked by the system. The part list could be scanned by an end-user and added to an existing ontology (such as WordNet), or used as a part of a rough semantic lexicon.
Many memory models assume that the semantic and physical features of words can be represented by collections of features abstractly represented by vectors. Most of these memory models are process oriented; they explicate the processes that operate on memory representations without explicating the origin of the representations themselves; the different attributes of words are typically represent...
This paper presents a new comprehensive multi-level Part-Of-Speech tag set and a Support Vector Machine based Part-Of-Speech tagger for the Sinhala language. The currently available tag set for Sinhala has two limitations: the unavailability of tags to represent some word classes and the lack of tags to capture inflection based grammatical variations of words. The new tag set, presented in this...
This is a continuation of the authors' paper of the same title which appeared in Volume 8 of this journal. The present part extends the authors' definitions of prefix and suffix (in written English) to corpora of three-vowel-string words, and implements them on a corpus K consisting of 19,329 graphemically distinct three-vowel-string words from the Shorter Oxford Dictionary. The notion of a par...
More than 100 years ago, Huey (1908/1968) indicated that the upper part of words was more relevant for perception than the lower part. Here we examined whether mutilated words, in their upper/lower portions (e.g., ), can automatically access their word units in the mental lexicon. To that end, we conducted four masked repetition priming experiments with the lexical decision task. Results showed...
Part-set cuing inhibition describes the common finding that re-presenting items from a word list can reduce subjects' overall recall performance for studied items. Do part-set cuing effects occur for false memories as well? In the present experiments, subjects studied lists of words drawn from Roediger and McDermott (1995). After studying each list, subjects completed math problems and then rec...
