In a clinical trial of spiramycin, Schmidt, Niordson, Reyn, and Bentzon (1965) observed a positive correlation between the susceptibility of gonococcal strains in vitro to spiramycin and sodium penicillin G, and that the gonococcal strains from thirteen patients not cured by spiramycin were less sensitive to penicillin. Positive correlation could also be demonstrated between the inhibitory valu...

The present study was done to detect the antibiotic resistance in S. pneumoniae. One hundred twenty S. pneumoniae isolates from clinical specimens and 50 from nasopharyngeal sites were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing by Kirby Bauer disk diffusion method and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) determination for penicillin and cefotaxime non-susceptible isolates. A total of 2...

There is at present considerable interest in the newer forms of penicillin which ha^ been introduced since the isolation of the penicillin nucleus 6-amino penicillanic in 1959 made possible, by substitution of differing side chains, the production of 3 whole range of new penicillin compounds. This trial was designed to compare the clinical effectiveness of two of these, phenethicillin and propi...

Since cefoxitin has been shown to be an effective alternative to spectinomycin for the treatment of infections due to penicillinase-producing strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae (PPNG) its efficacy was compared with that of a new cephalosporin, ceftriaxone (R013-9904). One hundred and twenty eight men with culture-confirmed gonococcal urethritis were treated with either 250 mg of ceftriaxone intra...

Streptococcus viridans is usually considered to be nonpathogenic in healthy patients. Some strains become penicillin-resistant and cause life-threatening infections in immuno-compromised patients. We report an immunocompetent boy who had community-acquired S. viridans pneumonia that was resistant to penicillin. Clinicians should note local patterns of virulence and antibiotic resistance in S. v...

We analyzed seven Streptococcus pneumoniae serogroup 35 isolates by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis of the genome and pbp2b gene nucleotide sequences. Three penicillin-susceptible strains and one penicillin-intermediate-resistant strain exhibited 100% identity to prototype R6. Two resistant strains and one other intermediate strain differed from them and contained a unique sequence.

The penetration of ertapenem, a new carbapenem with a long half-life, reached 7.1 and 2.4% into inflamed and noninflamed meninges, respectively. Ertapenem had excellent antibacterial activity in the treatment of experimental meningitis due to penicillin-sensitive and -resistant pneumococci, leading to a decrease of 0.69 +/- 0.17 and 0.59 +/- 0.22 log(10) CFU/ml x h, respectively, in the viable ...

Streptococcus pneumoniae is an infrequent cause of bacterial endocarditis, being responsible for 3% of adult cases. Recent studies reveal an alarming increase in the number of penicillin-resistant pneumococcal infections worldwide and cases of endocarditis caused by these bacteria have already been described. In the USA, for example, the levels of resistance are c. 44% and in France 42.8%. Spai...

The activity of garenoxacin was investigated in rats with experimental endocarditis due to staphylococci and viridans group streptococci (VGS). The staphylococci tested comprised one ciprofloxacin-susceptible and methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) isolate (isolate 1112), one ciprofloxacin-susceptible but methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) isolate (isolate P8), and one cipr...
