The literature on radiolucent lesions in unerupted permanent teeth is reviewed with particular attention to etiology. A case is presented which demonstrates severe coronal destruction of a mandibular second permanent molar. Histological evidence also is presented to confirm diagnosis of external resorption. Based on previous literature and the results of this case, the authors conclude that the...

The purpose of this study was to measure the shear bond strength of Gluma/Lumifor (Gluma and Lumifor--Columbus Dental, St. Louis, MO) to the occlusal dentin of primary first and second molars, permanent first and second molars and premolars. The data were examined for differences using a one-way analysis of variance and Duncan's Multiple Range test. The shear bond strength, (kc/cm2, x +/- SEM) ...

Supernumerary teeth may be defined as any teeth or tooth substance in excess of the usual configuration of 20 deciduous and 32 permanent teeth. Gemination is defined as an attempt by a single tooth bud to divide, with a resultant formation of either a large tooth with a bifid crown or two completely divided teeth throughout the crown and root. The study investigates the gender predictability of permanent maxillary first molar teeth. Mesio distal width of 30 permanent maxillary first molar teeth from casts of 15 male and 15 female patients between the age group of 1725 were measured. Results showed that permanent maxillary first molar tooth exhibited sexual dimorphism but accuracy of gender predictability was only moderate.

Abnormalities in number of teeth are occasionally noted in clinical cases. Many theories have been proposed as regards the causes of the occurrence of supernumerary teeth, including atavism theory, mechanical tooth germ separation theory, tissue induction theory, and dental laminar morphological disturbance theory. However, none of these theories alone offers a sufficient explanation for this p...

Secondary bone grafting in the alveolar cleft is performed to improve alveolar shape, guide permanent tooth eruption or move permanent teeth in the alveolar cleft area, and improve a concaved base in the nasal wing [1]. Such bone grafting is typically conducted 6-9 years before canine tooth eruption [2]. However, in some cases, patients obtain their permanent dentition without receiving bone gr...

Background: Knowledge of the normal tooth eruption patterns is essential for the identification and appropriate treatment of deviations in eruption that may endanger physiologic development. A delay in time between the exfoliation of a deciduous tooth and the eruption of its permanent successor may be related to a disorder known as dental retention. This occurs when tooth eruption does not occu...

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY There are few published data to support the ages of emergence of permanent dentition widely reported in horses. OBJECTIVES To clarify the chronology and sequence of permanent premolar (PM) tooth emergence in Thoroughbred racehorses. METHODS A prospective study was undertaken in which records were kept of deciduous PM 'cap' extractions performed during routine de...
