The polyphagous shot hole borer and Kuroshio shot hole borer, two members of the Euwallacea fornicatus species complex (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), are invasive ambrosia beetles that harbor distinct species of Fusarium fungal symbionts. Together with the damage caused by gallery construction, these two phytopathogenic Fusarium species are responsible for the emerging tree disease Fu...

Most citrus and avocado water-use studies have been conducted in inland orchards; however, orchards located in coastal areas are subject to cooler temperatures and foggier atmospheric conditions. To develop coastal area crop coefficients (Kc values) for irrigation management, we measured orchard consumptive water use (ETc) from two different commercial orchards located near Ventura. In addition...

The use of the percent dry matter as a maturity indicator for avocado is widely accepted. During a California Avocado Commission funded study to identify a minimum maturity standard for the Lamb Hass variety, we developed a new process for removing samples from the fruit for dry matter determination. After two years of testing and evaluation we have perfected a technique and designed an efficie...

In this paper, we present avocado, a distributed variant caller built on top of ADAM and Spark. avocado’s goal is to provide both high performance and high accuracy in an open source variant calling framework. To achieve this, we implement both local assembly and pileup-based single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) calling. A key innovation presented in our work involves the development of heurist...

While fungicides may be a major mechanism for control of avocado root rot, integrated management requires several other non-fungicidal approaches which are used together to maximize root rot control. Non-fungicidal methods of control include planting clean avocado nursery stock, selecting low hazard sites, planting on mounds in more hazardous sites, preventing the introduction of P. cinnamomi, ...

Eighty six isolates of C. gloeosporioides isolated from avocados from various production areas were compared using fruit inoculation studies. Differences were observed, and isolates could be grouped into three groups based on lesion size. These results are preliminary and further investigation must be carried out to confirm these findings.

Idealized edged and non-edged indenters, mimicking canine teeth, were used to puncture thin materials and thick materials. Less force was needed for the edged (triangular in cross section) indenter to penetrate thin Mylar, paper, leather, beetle elytra and turkey skin than the non-edged (circular in cross-section) indenter. Oak, grass and magnolia leaves responded equally to both indenters. In ...
