A facility to test the photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) for the solar neutrino detector Borexino was built at the Gran Sasso laboratory. Using the facility 2200 PMTs with optimal characteristics were selected from the 2350 delivered from the manufacturer. The details of the hardware used are presented. r 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V.

A large-solid-angle, Cherenkov detector beam loss monitor has been built and tested as part of the Linac Coherent Light Source machine protection system (MPS). The MPS is used to protect the undulator magnets by detecting high-energy electron beam loss. These electrons produce other forms of radiation that can lead to demagnetization of the undulator magnets. Cherenkov light is generated when p...

The interaction of ion beams with the surrounding residual gas leads to photon emission by the excited residual gas atoms and molecules. These photons in the visible spectrum range can be used to monitor the transverse beam profile. We therefore use a multichannel photomultiplier (PMT) together with an optical imaging system. Measurements at COSY synchrotron of the Forschungszentrum Jülich are ...

Very sensitive intensity autocorrelation measurement of 15-fs, 800-nm pulses from a Ti:sapphire laser has been achieved by using two-photon-induced photocurrent in a photomultiplier tube.

Abstract It is common practice to test the optical properties of photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) by illuminating entire photocathode region from front at once and measuring average performance. However, for optimal utilisation PMT performance in experiments, especially single-photon region, it essential also know systematic variations across photocathode, which requires measurements with focused l...

Abstract This work describes and shows data from a prototype instrument designed to sample transitory gamma rays resulting stockpile stewardship testing. The required instrumentation needs be large, sensitive, low cost, have the ability measure pulse widths as narrow 5 ns (or less). natural material for an meet these criteria is organic scintillator. In order cover large area reduce overall cos...

We advocate support of research aimed at developing alternatives to the photomultiplier tube for photon detection in large astroparticle experiments such as gamma-ray and neutrino astronomy, and direct dark matter detectors. Specifically, we discuss the development of large area photocathode microchannel plate photomultipliers and silicon photomultipliers. Both technologies have the potential t...

Dark matter has become a major topic of research as the attempt to described the gravitatioinal interactions between some unknown substance and the stars that make up the galaxacy has been approached. Photomultiplier tubes are used in the observation of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) in dark matter detection experiments, such as the Xenon 10 and Xenon 100 experiments conducted at ...
