We give a new definition of topological pressure for arbitrary (noncompact, non-invariant) Borel subsets of metric spaces. This new quantity is defined via a suitable variational principle, leading to an alternative definition of an equilibrium state. We study the properties of this new quantity and compare it with existing notions of topological pressure. We are particularly interested in the ...

We propose a new approach to assigning distance between fuzzy numbers. A pseudo-metric on the set of fuzzy numbers and a metric on the set of trapezoidal fuzzy numbers are described. The regular reducing functions and the Hausdorff metric are used to define the metric. Using this metric, we can approximate an arbitrary generalized left right fuzzy number with a trapezoidal one. Finally, powers ...

We present a pseudo-metric for weighted point sets. There are numerous situations, for example in the shape description domain, where the individual points in a feature point set have an associated attribute, a weight. A distance function that incorporates this extra information apart from the points' position can be very useful for matching and retrieval purposes. There are two main approaches...

Lie groups appear in many fields fromMedical Imaging to Robotics. In Medical Imaging and particularly in Computational Anatomy, an organ’s shape is often modeled as the deformation of a reference shape, in other words: as an element of a Lie group. In this framework, if one wants to model the variability of the human anatomy, e.g. in order to help diagnosis of diseases, one needs to perform sta...

The main achievements of Pseudo-Hermitian Quantum Mechanics and its distinction with the indefinite-metric quantum theories are reviewed. The issue of the non-uniqueness of the metric operator and its consequences for defining the observables are discussed. A systematic perturbative expression for the most general metric operator is offered and its application for a toy model is outlined.

by joint continuity of 7r at (go, x). If M is not metric the conclusion of Theorem 1 is no longer valid (consider G the circle and M the continuous functions on G with the topology of pointwise convergence). As a corollary, it is not hard to deduce that a Baire separable metric group G for which multiplication is continuous is a topological group (compare [9] and [2, p. 258]). For example the C...

This paper treats near-rings of zero-preserving Lipschitz functions on metric spaces that are also abelian groups, using pointwise addition of functions as addition and composition of functions as multiplication. We identify a condition on the metric ensuring that the set of all such Lipschitz functions is a near-ring, and we investigate the complications that arise from the lack of left distri...

We discuss and investigate the problem of existence of metric-compatible linear connections for a given space-time metric which is, generally, assumed to be semi-pseudo-Riemannian. We prove that under sufficiently general conditions such connections exist iff the rank and signature of the metric are constant. On this base we analyze possible changes of the space-time signature.
