Recent technical advances have added greatly to the ease with which virological methods may be applied to the study of poliomyelitis and allied infection of the central nervous system. These techniques have already borne abundant fruit in the development of a vaccine against poliomyelitis. The accurate appraisal of the preventive value of such a vaccine will depend on our ability to diagnose po...

Suspensions of the central nervous tissues of monkeys, containing the active filterable virus of poliomyelitis, may be injected into the brain of rabbits without setting up symptoms, provided the volume of injection does not cause dangerous increased intracranial pressure. Aside from the pressure effects which develop quickly, no other symptoms or pathological lesions are produced by the suspen...

Eradication of poliomyelitis from large metropolis cities in India has been difficult due to high population density and the presence of large urban slums. Three paralytic poliomyelitis cases were reported in Mumbai, India, in 1999 and 2000 in spite of high immunization coverage and good-quality supplementary immunization activities. We therefore established a systematic environmental surveilla...

During the 1931 epidemic of poliomyelitis our colleagues, practicing in the community, spoke of the difficulty encountered in the diagnosis of a large number of acute illnesses appearing among their patients. There seemed to be no certain distinction between the cases which possibly were poliomyelitis and those which probably were not. In the New Haven Hospital, probably owing to the selective ...

Poliomyelitis is a problem receiving increasing attention in this country. Although this disease is as old as ancient Egypt, its importance has only been recently recognized and before the middle of this century no significant study of the disease had been carried out. Statistical surveys (Paul, Havens and Van Rooyen, 1944; Paul, 1949; Khalil, Ragab and Sakr, 1954; Gilliam, Hemphill and Gerende...

From a series of tests covering 15 months, another instance is recorded of the detection of the virus of poliomyelitis in urban sewage. It has not yet been possible to detect the virus of poliomyelitis in sewage during non-epidemic periods. It is likely that the periodic sampling of sewage for pathogenic viruses or bacteria may be a method of epidemiological value.

We report the case of an eight-month-old girl who presented with a poliomyelitis-like paralysis in her left upper limb caused by enterovirus 71 infection. She recovered useful function after nerve transfers performed six months after the onset of paralysis. Early neurotisation can be used successfully in the treatment of poliomyelitis-like paralysis in children.

BACKGROUND Pakistan currently provides a substantial challenge to global polio eradication, having contributed to 73% of reported poliomyelitis in 2015 and 54% in 2016. A better understanding of the risk factors and movement patterns that contribute to poliovirus transmission across Pakistan would support evidence-based planning for mass vaccination campaigns. METHODS AND FINDINGS We fit mixe...

ALTHOUGH cardiovascular collapse had previously been noted in patients with acute poliomyelitis,' 2 Baker and his colleagues3' 4first indicated that this lethal symptom complex is a relatively common feature of bulbar poliomyelitis. They examined in detail the medulla of 80 cases dying of poliomyelitis and concluded that this syndrome was due to involvement of the large cells in the ventromedia...

Objective To describe the characteristics of compatible poliomyelitis cases and to assess the programmatic implications of clusters of such cases in India. Methods We described the characteristics of compatible poliomyelitis cases, identified clusters of compatible cases (two or more in the same district or neighbouring districts within two months), and examined their relationship to wild polio...
