A generalization of the linear fractional integral equation u(t) = u0 + ∂−αAu(t), 1 < α < 2, which is written as a Volterra matrix–valued equation when applied as a pixel–by–pixel technique, has been proposed for image denoising (restoration, smoothing,...). Since the fractional integral equation interpolates a linear parabolic equation and a hyperbolic equation, the solution enjoys intermediat...

We consider the semiclassical limit for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We introduce a phase/amplitude representation given by a system similar to the hydrodynamical formulation, whose novelty consists of including some asymptotically vanishing viscosity. We prove that the system is always locally well-posed in a class of Sobolev spaces, and globally well-posed for a fixed positive Planck c...

We prove a general theorem providing smoothed analysis estimates for conic condition numbers of problems of numerical analysis. Our probability estimates depend only on geometric invariants of the corresponding sets of ill-posed inputs. Several applications to linear and polynomial equation solving show that the estimates obtained in this way are easy to derive and quite accurate. The main theo...

Smoothed analysis of complexity bounds and condition numbers has been done, so far, on a case by case basis. In this paper we consider a reasonably large class of condition numbers for problems over the complex numbers and we obtain smoothed analysis estimates for elements in this class depending only on geometric invariants of the corresponding sets of ill-posed inputs. These estimates are for...

We consider the solution to Burger’s equation coupled to a stochastic noise in Ito’s sense. The main random properties of the wave are determined. The solution is related to a deterministic problem with a rescaled diffusion coefficient. Depending on the value of a parameter, the initial value problem may be ill posed, well posed up to an explosion time, or well posed for all time. Traveling wav...

We study a one-dimensional transport equation with nonlocal velocity which was recently considered in the work of Córdoba, Córdoba and Fontelos [4]. We show that in the subcritical and critical cases the problem is globally well-posed with arbitrary initial data in Hmax{3/2−γ,0}. While in the supercritical case, the problem is locally well-posed with initial data in H3/2−γ , and is globally wel...

We prove the discontinuity for the weak L(T)-topology of the flowmap associated with the periodic Benjamin-Ono equation. This ensures that this equation is ill-posed in Hs(T) as soon as s < 0 and thus completes exactly the well-posedness result obtained in [12]. AMS Subject Classification : 35B20, 35Q53.

We characterize well-posedness in Hölder spaces for an abstract version of the equation (∗) u′′ + λu′′′ = c(∆u + μ∆u′) + f which model the vibrations of flexible structures possessing internal material damping and external force f . As a consequence, we show that in case of the Laplacian with Dirichlet boundary conditions, equation (*) is always well-posed provided 0 < λ < μ.

In this paper, we consider in Rn the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with initial data in the Sobolev space W s,p for p < 2. It is well known that this problem is ill posed. However, we show that after a linear transformation by the linear semigroup the problem becomes locally well posed in W s,p for 2n n+1 < p < 2 and s > n(1 − 1 p ). Moreover, we show that in one space d...
