In this paper we present a proposal to integrate pragmatic information, both from the preceding discourse and the extra-linguistic context, in the grammar. We provide an analysis of elliptical fragments according to how they are anchored to the context and the kind of resolution they require. We also present an alternative view about the syntax of fragments.

In this article, we highlight the need to create a more Pragmatic Web which would act as an extension of the Semantic Web, where information is not only given a well-defined meaning, but the meaning is understood within the context it is used. Using foundations such as Tolk’s Dynamic Web model, we propose a Trust Model, dealing with the Social Web that we believe, would ‘complete’ the Pragmatic...

A compositional semantics for focusing subjuncts-words such as only, even, and also--is developed from Rooth's theory of association with focus. By adapting the theory so that it can be expressed in terms of a frame-based semantic formalism, a semantics that is more computationally practical is arrived at. This semantics captures pragmatic subtleties by incorporating a two-part representation, ...

A system to convert digitized sheet music into a symbolic music representation is presented. A pragmatic approach is used that conceptualizes this primarily two-dimensional structural recognition problem as a one-dimensional one. The transparency of the implementation owes a great deal to its implementation in a dynamic, object-oriented language. This system is a part of a locally developed end...

Goal-orientation is a widespread and useful approach to Requirements Engineering. However, quality assessment frameworks focused on goaloriented processes are either limited or remain on the theoretical side. Requirements quality initiatives range from simple metrics applicable to requirements documents, to general-purpose quality frameworks that include syntactic, semantic and pragmatic concer...

This paper addresses the question "why and how is it that we say the same thing differently to different people, or even to the same person in different circumstances?" We vary the content and form of our text in order to convey more information than is contained in the literal meanings of our words. This information expresses the speaker's interpersonal goals toward the hearer and, in general,...

This paper analyzes the theoretical, pragmatic, and substantive factors that have hampered the integration between psychology and psychometrics. Theoretical factors include the operationalist mode of thinking which is common throughout psychology, the dominance of classical test theory, and the use of "construct validity" as a catch-all category for a range of challenging psychometric problems....

We present a methodology for enabling mobile service robots to follow natural language instructions for object pick-and-place tasks from nonexpert users, with and without user-specified constraints, and with a particular focus on spatial language understanding. Our approach is capable of addressing both the semantic and pragmatic properties of object movement-oriented natural language instructi...

It is argued that genuinely subsentential phrases can be used to perform speech acts with truth conditions. Attempts to assimilate this phenomenon to syntactic ellipsis (sluicing, gapping, etc.) are discussed, and are rejected on the grounds that any implementation of this idea will involve a redundant level of representation in natural language that plays no role in the interpretation process,...
